Here is a news item about Asian Paints. This was
first published by European Coatings Net
(http://www.coatings.de ).
Asian Paints looks
to "decorative" growth
Asian Paints (India) Ltd, the country's biggest
paints manufacturer, expects the Rs 46
000-million domestic market for decorative paints
(1 EUR = 43 INR) to grow at around 8-9 per cent
in 2001-2002, according to company sources in
Mumbai, 17 Aug. The company's own business in the
segment may grow at between three and four per
cent "above the market growth," the
2000-2001 annual report of Asian Paints said,
pointing out further, "the paint industry
has always fared better than the rest of the
manufacturing sector".
The revenue of Asian Paints for last fiscal - Rs
11 965.40 million - was earned 93 per cent from
paints and seven per cent from chemicals.
Observing that a benevolent monsoon can revive
confidence in the economy, the report noted,
"opportunities available in the rural market
is well recognised by the company". Besides,
Asian Paints which has an installed base of
around 2,000 dealer tinting systems, proposes to
install another 500 to 600 tinting systems in
2002. Last year, the company's paints business
grew at about 12 per cent against 19 per cent for
the preceding year. "The total coatings
market would probably have been around Rs 61 000
million. The average annual growth rate has been
around 8-10 per cent; the market grew at over 15
per cent in the previous year, 1999-2000,"
the report said.
NEW PPG POWDER
COATINGS IMPROVE MAR, SCRATCH RESISTANCE
(8/16/2001
PITTSBURGH, Aug 16, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE))
PPG Industries has announced
a breakthrough powder coating technology that has
the potential to greatly improve mar and scratch
resistance in a broad range of industrial
applications.
Several formulations of ENVIROCRON XMR powder
coatings from PPG have approached the mar
performance usually associated with porcelain
enamels, as measured by commonly used industry
tests.
"This represents a huge leap forward in
powder coating technology," said Rob
Edwards, PPG's director of global powder
operations. "This new technology has the
potential to have a huge impact in any industrial
application where the scratch resistance of the
coating is beneficial."
The improved mar and scratch resistance delivered
by ENVIROCRON XMR coatings will provide
significant value to customers, not only in
extended performance on the coated part, but also
in reduced handling and packaging costs in the
customer's facility and during transportation,
Edwards said.
The coating technology has undergone extensive
testing at PPG's Coatings Research and
Development Center in Allison Park, Pa.
ENVIROCRON XMR coatings are available in a broad
range of powder coating chemistries, including
pigmented and clear formulations.
Pittsburgh-based PPG is a leading global supplier
of coatings, fiber glass, fabricated glass and
chemicals with about 120 production locations.
Sales were US$8.6 billion in 2000.

Coating Conference on Adhesion and Performance
Enhancement and Film Formation to be
held in Zurich Switzerland (3rd-6th September
2001) Dr. Dirke Meine says,
" How can you formulate coatings that
strongly adhere to difficult substrate? What
innovative concepts exist to optimise film
formation? These are the urgent questions the
coating industry is facing today. And these are
the the questions that will be answered during
the 6th and 7th European and Coating Conference
entitled Adhesion and Performance Enhancement and
Film Formation. Particular focus will be on the
emulsion polymerisation of waterborne systems, on
Innovative concepts in powder coatings providing
improvement in melting/curing process,, on new
radiation curing and cross linking mechanism in
solvent borne coatings.
The session II Titled Progress in Powder
Coatings will contain

HYGIENIC COATINGS: TECHNOLOGIES AND PERFORMANCE
24 September 2001, Teddington, UK
PRA is holding a one-day symposium on hygienic
coatings, at the Lensbury Conference Centre,
Teddington, UK, on 24 September 2001. The
symposium will provide an opportunity for
interested parties to review the requirements
for hygienic coatings, the technologies
available for producing suitable products, and
methods of assessing activity. Through both
formal presentation and informal discussion, the
occasion will identify potential topics for
future research, and explore the formation of a
Targeted Interest Group for hygienic coatings.
