Cytec expanding global
production of UV curing resins
Cytec Industries Inc. announced its plans for a new production unit to
manufacture epoxy and urethane acrylates at the company's Fengxian site
production facility near Shanghai, China. The additional capacity should
shorten the supply chain process and increase Cytec's ability to respond to
customer applications and technology needs in the region. Current plans are
for the plant to come on stream during the first half of 2008. In addition,
Cytec is nearing completion
of the expansion of its production facility for UV curing resins in North
Augusta, GA, USA. This expansion will significantly increase the capacity of
monomer production in the
Americas, complementing its current production in the USA. The expansion is
expected to gradually come on stream during 2007.
Two new production units in
India
Jotun expands in
India by building two new production units in Pune.
Jotun invests NOK 120 million to build two new powder coating and paint
factories. A plot has already been earmarked and construction will start
next year, with the factories planned for completion in the second quarter
of 2008. The project is a cooperation between Jotun Powder Coatings, Jotun
Coatings and Jotun Paints.
India is a demanding market to operate in, and according to the World Bank
the main challenges are high staff turnover, the effect infrastructure has
on lead times and bureaucracy.
"India wishes to build more ships, and well-known shipping companies, who
are already our customers, are in the process of establishing themselves
there. We have been selling in India for a while now, so building the
factories is a natural development" says Esben Hersve, Group Executive Vice
President in Jotun Coatings.
Currently, Jotun's turnover in India is approximately NOK 100 million per
year, with the paint market estimated to be worth USD 2 billion. In ten
year's time, Jotun hopes to have a turnover of around NOK 600 million,
according to Dagens Næringsliv, a Norwegian financial newspaper.
One of the Indian Manufacturer had had this to say about Jotun's arrival
"It is better to
have a multinational investing in India because along with the project lot
of other advantages follow. When the Europeans are very particular about
RoHS *, may be, Indian companies may pick up a few lessons from them.
As far as competition is concerned, it is common in any business, be it
local or an outsider. All of us must gear up to take on the any might, in
the process we may get a chance to learn a lot.
The Paint and Powder Coating scenario is slowly changing in India with the
Health & Safety, Environment bodies tightening the noose on the use of
solvent based manufacturers. If I look at it, I would say that the future
will be more towards water based and powder coatings where all of us will
have our own role to play
Another said,"
Basically one more strong contender in the game. More important is whether
they plan to address the high end ( niche and upgraded technologies)
Architectural segment/s would be a sure target"
*What is RoHS?
The RoHS Directive
stands for "the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in
electrical and electronic equipment". This Directive bans the placing on the
EU market of new electrical and electronic equipment containing more than
agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated
biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants.
Manufacturers need to understand the requirements of the RoHS Directive to
ensure that their products, and their components, comply.
WHEN DID RoHS COME INTO force?
The RoHS Directive and the UK RoHS regulations came into force on 1 July
2006.
The RoHS Directive is an Article 95 single market directive.
Enforcing RoHS
The National Weights and Measures Laboratory (NWML) has been awarded the
contract to set up the UK’s national RoHS enforcement body. We are now
delivering RoHS enforcement since the regulations were fully implemented on
the 1st July 2006.
We have developed this website to provide you with information and help
associated with RoHS compliance and enforcement. This includes a web version
of the decision tree we intend to use, an FAQ section which we are
continually updating as your enquiries come to us, and a list of other
useful resources that are available to you in our links section.
If you are hosting events relating to RoHS enforcement and would like input
from us, please contact us to discuss. We would like to support as many
targeted events in the EEE sector as we can.
