The Green Ambassador !
NDTV has been very keen in increasing awareness  of the green movement among its viewers. The tips and guidlines are extremely useful for the common man to reduce his fuel water and electricity consumption and contribute to extend the life of this planet as usable home. The Greenathon has raised over Rs 2 crore for TERI's Lighting a Billion Lives campaign that aims at solar powering villages across the country.

It has Priyanka Chopra actress and former Miss World as its green ambassador. We have some questions. Are celebrities the correct choice for a green ambassador? Celebrities are, in general, very power hungry. Do they consider pooling a car while driving to the work place? Do they consider reducing the electricity consumption by switching off their Air Conditioners? We suggest to compare the figure of the  Carbon footprint  , Electricity, Fuel, Water consumption, Garbage generation,  of their green ambassadors with that of an average Indian citizen and reconsider the selection. Do they practice what they preach ?

Al Gore,  an American environmental activist and former vice president consumed twenty times more electricity (221,000 kilowatt-hours in 2006) than the national average ( national average of 10,656 kilowatt-hours.) This is the 'Inconvenient Truth'.

Colours of safety
Colours have always fascinated us, be it a child playing spontaneously with colours, or a mature work of art by an artist or a building by an architect. In modern living spaces, the colour scheme or paint has become aesthetically important. However, with this shift, paint safety too has become integral to the consciousness of users.

A paint is primarily made up of pigments, binders, solvent and additives. Each of these elements have their own function which is used for bringing a particular shade, structure, feel and durability, or simply, to make it cost effective. These elements can be made up of natural or synthetic material or a combination of both. Lead is one of the many elements used in paint which has a hazardous effect on the human body. Indeed, lead exposure can come from deteriorated paint in older housing or lead pipes, or even from past emissions of leaded gasoline.

According to the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), “Children eating lead-bearing paint or the consumption of lead contaminated water are important sources of non-industrial poisoning.” According to the research done at CSE, exposure to lead can cause a variety of neurological disorders such as lack of muscular coordination, convulsions and coma. Lower levels of lead have been associated with measurable changes in children’s mental development and behaviour. Chronic lead exposure in adults can result in increased blood pressure, nerve disorders and memory or concentration problems.

Information available on the website of Asian Paints, ICT and Berger Paints state that they have started using lead free paints in the household segment. However, according to a research report by CSE, local paint manufacturers still use paints with lead content. <more>

DuPont sued again following mesothelioma cancer death
Monday, November 9th, 2009

Chemical giant DuPont is facing yet another asbestos-related lawsuit. This time, the plaintiff is Roger Neely, the son of former DuPont worker Lively Neely. For over twenty years, Lively Neely brought home asbestos dust on his work clothes, which Roger Neely now believes caused the death of his mother, Ruby.

Ruby Neely died earlier this year after developing mesothelioma, a rare cancer linked almost exclusively to asbestos exposure. The cancer can take decades to develop, and yet can kill within months of the onset of symptoms.

"DuPont failed to provide any type of warnings or instructions about the safe use of asbestos," said H. Douglas Nichol, the family’s attorney. "With regard to Mrs. Neely, they were allowing workers to go home with asbestos on their clothing, and didn’t provide change of clothing or showers to prevent that from happening." <more>

EPA settles with Magnetic Inspection Laboratory on hazardous waste violations
CHICAGO (Oct. 22 , 2009) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has reached an agreement with Magnetic Inspection Laboratory Inc., Elk Grove Village, Ill., for alleged violations of federal rules on hazardous waste. The company, a testing and metal coating business, has agreed to pay a penalty of $62,031 to settle the violations. <more>

National VOC Emission Standards for Aerosol Coatings
In June of 2009, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established national reactivity-based emission standards for 170 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) used in aerosol coating products. This aerosol coatings reactivity rule aims to encourage reformulation of aerosol coatings to reduce ground-level ozone formation. The rule specifies reactivity limits for 36 aerosol product categories. The 170 VOCs are ranked by their reactivity factor (RF, units in grams of ozone per gram of VOC). VOCs with a high RF are more likely to form ozone, an air pollutant, than VOCs with a lower RF.<more>

Hundreds turn out for hazardous waste event
PARKERSBURG - Hundreds of people lined up their vehicles Saturday, despite a gray sky and constant rain, to dispose of paints, thinners and other household chemicals during the Wood County Hazardous Waste Cleanup.

The free event was held at Erickson All-Sport Facility in south Parkersburg and was sponsored by DuPont Washington Works and the Wood County Solid Waste Authority.

SWA director John Reed said the event accepted pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, algaecides, old gasoline, old medication, florescent lights, batteries, cleaning liquids, paint, paint thinner, used oil, used antifreeze and unknown liquids.

Reed said it would be several days before he had figures on the amount of materials collected, but organizers counted 1,121 vehicles which came to Erickson for the five-hour program, which ran from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Vienna resident Bobby Adair said he saw a newspaper ad about the dropoff and thought it was an "excellent" service. Saturday was the first time he had brought anything to a hazardous waste cleanup event.<more>

Typical C8 levels may be linked to higher cholesterol
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A new scientific study has found a possible connection between increased cholesterol levels and concentrations of the toxic chemical C8 similar to those present in an average American's blood.

Researchers at Boston University found C8 levels were associated with higher cholesterol in blood samples from a national Centers for Disease Control survey used to monitor levels of chemicals in the general U.S. population.
Previous studies of workers and of people who live near plants where C8 was made or used reported similar findings, but based on much higher levels of C8. The median C8 level in the blood samples in the new study was 3.8 parts per billion, similar to what has been found in various studies of the general population.

C8 is another name for perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA. It is one of a family of perfluorinated chemicals, or PFCs. In West Virginia, DuPont had used C8 since the 1950s at its Washington Works plant south of Parkersburg. C8 is a processing agent used to make Teflon and other nonstick and stain-resistant products <more>

Illegally Dumped Paint Originally From Six Flags
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21)
Last March, City of Dallas crews made a surprising discovery. They found hundreds of cans of paint, many of them rusted, some possibly 30 years old and others leaking through dumpsters and onto Pilgrim Street in Pleasant Grove.

After discovering the paint crews called the Dallas Marshals – who investigate illegal dumping. Investigators say between 700 and 1,000 cans of paint were found. "We've never seen that quantity of paint dumped before," said Sgt. Paul Hansen of the Dallas Marshal's Office.

Some of the labels on the cans warned of hazardous waste dangers, such as flammability. Hansen said some of the paint even tested positive for lead. "The fact that it was lead based; the fact that it was flammable; it could have caused an environmental problem and safety concern."

So where did all of the paint cans come from? The paint is from one of the area's most popular attractions: Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington.

According to marshals, Six Flags representatives came and acknowledged the cans were originally theirs. Investigator David Hobbs says everything began back in 2006. "According to a witness from Six Flags, they had lead discharges in their sewer system and had to flush their sewer system and had to flush their lines. And after that, they suspected the lead was coming from the paint." <more>

3rd PaintExpo, Leading International Trade Fair for Industrial Coating Technology from 13 through 16 April 2010 in Karlsruhe (Germany)

Improved Economic Climate in Painting Sector as well

Whether the Ifo World Economic Climate Indicator or upwardly corrected growth forecasts are considered, there are many signs which suggest that the world economy is recovering. Manufacturers of industrial coating technology are feeling the effects of the upswing in the form of increasing numbers of project launches and orders. PaintExpo, leading international trade fair for industrial coating technology, is also experiencing great demand. The market and technology leaders from nearly all exhibition areas will be represented at the show from 13 to 16 April 2010 at the exhibition centre in Karlsruhe, Germany.

In particular during economically challenging times, a strong focus on the customers is especially important. Trade fairs with clearly delineated offerings are amongst the most effective instruments for maintaining existing business relations and gaining new customers. Its concentration on the process sequence for industrial painting technologies is one of the reasons that PaintExpo enjoys such great demand amongst suppliers and service providers from the painting industry. “As a result of its highly representative and comprehensive offerings, PaintExpo has great international appeal for the users. At the same time, as opposed to so-called surface finishing trade fairs, the exhibitors know that the expert visitors are interested exclusively in industrial coating technologies. And thus PaintExpo is highly efficient for both groups”, explains Juergen Haussmann, managing director of show promoters FairFair GmbH.

Low-Point Now Lies in the Past
This is why nearly all of the market and technology leaders will participate at PaintExpo 2010, which will be held in Karlsruhe, Germany, from the 13th through the 16th of April – good timing in light of the fact that the economic skies are beginning to brighten up. Amongst other things, this is evidenced by the Ifo World Economic Climate Indicator, which rose for the second time in a row during the third quarter of 2009. Other positive signs include constantly rising order receipts in sectors which are relevant for suppliers of industrial painting technology. “The automotive, steel and construction industries are amongst BASF Coatings’ most important customers. In particular in these sectors, the economic crisis has affected our business with vehicle and industrial paints. We’ve nevertheless been able to maintain our position within this generally declining market. We haven’t lost any market shares during the crisis – on the contrary, we’ve even made gains in some areas. The low-point now lies in the past. Even though recovery is slow and unsteady at the moment, things are shaping up well for us on the whole”, says Raimar Jahn, CEO at BASF Coatings AG.
The fact that business is picking up again all over the world is being noticed by manufacturers of systems and application technology as well, as Uwe A. Weidauer, Senior Vice President for Systems Sales at J. Wagner GmbH, elucidates: “Recently, the number of project RFQs has increased for us considerably and is currently approaching the levels experienced in the record breaking years of 2007 and 2008. Order receipts have also been continuously on the rise for several months now. And the orders aren’t just coming from Germany alone – more and more are being received from Eastern Europe, France, Greece and Turkey, as well as from Asia and North America.” RFQs as well as orders are targeted on the one hand at honing the customer’s competitive edge by exploiting potential savings, for example where energy and material consumption is concerned. On the other hand, increased flexibility is also a central issue, because painting or coating for small manufacturing lots and the great variety of colours which is demanded nowadays usually can’t be managed economically with existing systems. This is confirmed by Dr. José Gamero, Marketing Manager at LacTec GmbH: “Flexibility and savings are the crux of the matter in the RFQs we’re receiving to an ever greater extent. Enquiries are coming from Europe, but there’s movement in the North and South American markets again as well. We’re expecting business to pick up on the Asian continent too, especially in India and China. We assume that order receipts will continue to increase during the first quarter of 2010 as well. This is corroborated by the seriousness of the RFQs, within the context of which we’re conducting in-house tests.” At ILS GmbH too, more and more RFQs have been coming in during recent months. And as Michael Müller has noticed, they demonstrate that more importance is once again being placed upon quality where projects for both system optimisation and replacement are concerned.
As a result of the mood within the markets which is brightening up to an ever greater extent, the manufacturers assume that longer lead times will have to be reckoned with in the foreseeable future. “As is also the case with other companies, we’ve had to streamline our resources due to the economic crisis, and we’ve aligned ourselves to the industries which haven’t been hit too hard. Available capacities have been reduced as a result. If the investment volumes which are indicated by realistic RFQs actually materialise, this will lead to longer delivery times, and perhaps even higher prices”, explains Uwe. A. Weidauer.

Growing paints
Paint companies turned up the pitch during the festival season and reaped rich rewards..
It has been a happy Diwali for most businesses, thanks to increased consumer demand. The same holds true for paints and emulsion paints manufacturers who seem to have converted the festival of lights into the festival of colours. An increased spend in marketing over the previous festival season has translated into greater sales.

The festival season is traditionally the time of the year when most people choose to get their houses re-painted. Diwali marks the beginning of a new year for most North Indians, which is accompanied by a new look to homes across the country. After the slowdown of last year, growth is back for paints manufacturers. Whether it’s the new companies or the veterans, sales are up and the festive cheer is back.

The domestic paints market is estimated at Rs 17,000 crore, according to the latest industry estimates. Seventy-five per cent of this market is dominated by decorative paints used for painting homes.

With the demand seemingly returning to normal this season, market leader Asian Paints further consolidated its market share of 30 per cent this year. The company’s financial results for the quarter ended September 2009 reported almost 19 per cent growth in net sales. Asian Paints’ profits more than doubled for the quarter.

“Demand conditions for our decorative business have been good in most parts of the country. Only the international business was impacted by the global slowdown. However, despite the slowdown, South Asia and the Middle East performed well,” P. M. Murty, Managing Director and CEO, Asian Paints, is quoted as saying on the BSE Web site.

Though a fairly recent entrant to the domestic market, Nippon Paints is rapidly gaining market share in the markets it operates in. According to Ramakanth Akula, Vice-President (Decoratives), “We embarked on a phased geographical expansion. Currently we operate in South India and in a few pockets of the West. Our focus is mainly on premium-end emulsions. Our market share in South India, in the emulsion paints category, would be 10 per cent.” The company launched an aggressive marketing campaign this time to attract more buyers. Akula told BrandLine, “A 360-degree media campaign was carried out in the markets where we operate. A new TVC which starred animated characters called ‘Blobbies’ was aired during the festival season to differentiate us from the competition. The ‘Blobbies’ are an army of cheerful, animated paint drops on a mission to paint India in every imaginable hue on the Nippon Paint colour chart.” <more>

INTERVIEW-Kansai Nerolac to up capacity by 15 pct
MUMBAI, Nov 5 (Reuters) - Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd (KANE.BO: Quote, Profile, Research) will add a fifth plant in December to cater to growing demand in decoratives paint segment and expects to raise capacity by 15 percent with the addition, a top official said.

Kansai Nerolac gets 55 percent of its revenues from decoratives, but is the market leader in the industrial segment with a market share of 42 percent, managing director H.M. Bharuka told Reuters in an interview late on Wednesday.

Kansai, India's second largest paints maker, has earmarked capital expenditure of 1 billion rupees in 2009/10, mainly for building the new decorative plant and for capacity expansion in existing plants, he said.

"We are spending more in decoratives as we are putting up a new facility near Bangalore, Karnataka, which will go live by December," he said.

"And as far as industrial (segment) is concerned brownfield expansion is underway in existing facilities."

The firm's current capacity stands at about 175,000 tonnes an annum and the new plant will raise capacity by 15 percent annually, he said.<more>

AkzoNobel to Buy Dow Powder Coatings
AkzoNobel has announced signing an agreement with The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) to acquire its powder coatings activities. Financial details were not disclosed.

AkzoNobel expects the deal to bring key technological know-how and significant potential to its Powder Coatings business as well as to enhance the company's position in the U.S.

Dow purchased the powder coatings activities earlier this year as part of its acquisition of Rohm & Haas. The business achieves global sales of several hundred million dollars and employs around 700 people.

“This is a strategic acquisition which will enable us to further penetrate key industrial coatings segments," explained Leif Darner, the AkzoNobel Board member responsible for Performance Coatings.

With powder coatings factories in the US, Europe, and China, Rohm & Haas developed several important new technologies—especially for the automotive and architectural segments—while the deal will also add MDF and thermoplastic capabilities to AkzoNobel's existing expertise.

"Our intention is to move towards a more dedicated approach, whereby sites concentrate on specific technologies," added Rob Molenaar, Managing Director of AkzoNobel Powder Coatings.<more>

Nanoparticle-Based Coating Prevents Ice Buildup
PITTSBURGH - Preventing the havoc wrought when freezing rain collects on roads, power lines and aircraft could be only a few nanometers away. A University of Pittsburgh-led team describes, in the Nov. 3 edition of the journal Langmuir, a nanoparticle-based coating that thwarts the buildup of ice on solid surfaces and is easily applied. The coating was developed in the lab of Di Gao, a Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Professor in Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering.

The paper, by lead author and Pitt doctoral student Liangliang Cao, presents the first evidence of anti-icing properties for a burgeoning class of water repellants, including the Pitt coating, known as superhydrophobic coatings. These thin films mimic the rutted surface of lotus leaves by creating microscopic ridges that reduce the surface area to which water can adhere. However, the authors note that because ice behaves differently than water, the ability to repulse water cannot be readily applied to ice inhibition. Cao's coauthors include Gao, Jianzhong Wu, a Chemical Engineering Professor at the University of California at Riverside, and Andrew Jones and Vinod Sikka of Ross Technology Corp. of Leola, PA. <more>

Sico Paints Unveils 2010-2011 Color Forecast
LONGUEUIL, Canada – Move over neutral color schemes. Livelier hues will be making a comeback in home décor in 2010-2011, and it’s all about using color as a mood lifter in the midst of challenging times, according to leading Canadian paint brand Sico Paints.

“During the past years, Canadians have opted for comforting, warm neutrals like browns and beiges as a result of an uncertain economic, political and environmental climate, but now people have had enough with doom and gloom and are looking for a change, a new beginning,” said Stéphanie Pelland, Marketing Communication Manager for the Sico brand and member of the international color forecaster Color Marketing Group. “In 2010-2011, we’ll see a trend toward consumers choosing livelier colors to reflect their optimism in their quest for a brighter future.”

Colorful hues such as deep reds and purples, vivid blues and greens, pigment-infused pastels such as baby blues and pinks, and earthy golds and clays will be among the new colors featured in next year’s palette.<more>

House Passes Chemical Security Measure Over Industry Objections Share Business
Nov. 6 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. House passed legislation today opposed by DuPont Co. and other firms that would give the government the authority to force companies to replace chemicals that terrorists could use in attacks with safer alternatives.

The measure, approved 230-193, would make permanent the homeland security secretary’s power to oversee security practices at chemical plants. The legislation also proposes that Congress approve $900 million from 2011 to 2013 to fund chemical-plant security.

Congress in 2006 passed a law giving this oversight to the homeland security secretary in response to post-Sept. 11 fears that terrorists could steal dangerous chemicals or target the plants themselves. Lawmakers made the secretary’s power temporary because they couldn’t reach a compromise on permanent standards<more>

Benjamin Moore Helps Define the Color of the Universe
E-mail to a Friend Add To Favorites Print (MONTVALE, NJ--November, 2009) -- Look. Up in the sky. It's a bird. It's a plane. No, it's Benjamin Moore Ivory Tower 2157-70, a warm, almost peachy white.

Or, at least that is the paint color most closely matched to the beige tone that NASA scientists say is the color of our universe.

A report recently issued on nasa.gov noted that a group of NASA scientists wondered what color the entire sky would be if it was "smeared out." Their curiosity was triggered while researching what stars are commonplace in nearby galaxies. The answer was a "conditionally perceived shade of beige" that earned the name "Cosmic Latte." Benjamin Moore's color experts analyzed the posted hue and found the Ivory Tower match among its 3,300-color palette.

And, just what did it take for the NASA team to come to its findings? They measured light from thousands of stars from more than 200,000 galaxies, and computed a total average, assigning a color value. The single perceived composite color they came up with has become much less blue over the past 10 billion years, indicating that redder stars are becoming more prevalent. <more>
