Implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) is unlikely to have any significant impact on the price of paints for end-consumers.
In fact, a short term disruption in supplies can be expected for a one to two month period, according to the Indian Paint Association.

According to Abhijit Roy, MD and CEO, Berger Paints and the President of the Indian Paint Association, paints are being taxed under the 28 per cent slab in case of GST; which is closer to the effective rate of tax that the industry is paying at present.<more>

Berger Paints approves acquisition of Saboo Coatings
The board of Berger Paints approved the acquisition of 100% stake in Chandigarh-based, niche paint maker Saboo Coatings for a total consideration of Rs 81.77 Cr.

Saboo Coatings Pvt. Ltd. is engaged in carrying out the business of manufacturing speciality liquid coatings classified as ‘Industrial Coatings’ by the paint industry in the segments of agriculture and construction equipment (ACE), automotive, fans, electronics, elevators etc.<more>

Berger Paints has decided to strengthen its industrial paints business and grow inorganically through the acquisition of Chandigarh-based niche paint maker Saboo Coatings for a cash consideration of Rs 81.77 crore.
"The board has approved the acquisition of 100 per cent of paid up equity share capital of Saboo Coatings Private Limited (SCPL) from its existing shareholders at a consideration of Rs 81.77 crore," Berger Paints said in a communication to the Bombay Stock Exchange.<more>

Berger Paints plans to enter non-paint home decor business
Kolkata: Berger Paints India Ltd said in a regulatory filing on Monday that it was seeking shareholders’ approval to expand its product range, following in the footsteps of industry leader Asian Paints Ltd, which has already launched various new products such as adhesives, painting implements and waterproofing solutions.

While seeking approval to expand the scope of business, Berger has said in its notice to shareholders that it may, going forward, offer a wide variety of home decor and home improvement products and services such as adhesives, tiles, wooden flooring, laminates, Venetian blinds, waterproofing solutions and even decorative items made of , brass, copper and other metals.<more>

PPG walks away from battle to buy Akzo Nobel
U.S. paints and coatings maker PPG Industries (PPG.N) has dropped its attempt to buy Dutch rival Akzo Nobel (AKZO.AS) in a 26.3 billion euro ($29.5 billion) deal, stung by repeated rejections from the company, legal defeats and hostility from Dutch politicians.

Although it has retained its independence, Akzo must make good on promises it made to appease shareholders unhappy after it refused to enter talks with Pittsburgh-based PPG.<more>

Axalta Completed the Acquisition of Valspar’s Business
On June 1, 2017, Axalta (AXTA) announced that it completed the acquisition of Valspar’s (VAL) North American Industrial Wood Coatings business. The business was primarily divested by Valspar in order to get antitrust approval to facilitate its acquisition by Sherwin-Williams (SHW)

The North American Industrial Wood Coatings business reported net sales of $225 million in 2016. As a result, the impact might be seen in 2Q17 earnings in the form of increased revenue. However, the acquisition could impact Axalta’s earnings per share because it might factor in the acquisition cost. The deal is estimated to cost Axalta ~$420 million.<more>
