Berger eyes good
sales around Diwali
(European Coatings
Flash - October 08, 2001)
Berger Paints is upbeat about
sales as it gears up for the festive season
ahead. Speaking to the pressmen in New Delhi 26
Sept., Kuldip Dhingra, chairman, Berger
Paints, said it is around Diwali that
decorative paints market witnesses a spurt in
sales. And Berger is looking forward to a good
sales volume. However, he declined to quantify
his expectations. He added that this year is all
the more auspicious as the intervening period
between shradh and navratri is the maximum in the
last 144 years. This period will stretch to eight
weeks this year. This has perked up the paint
industry which is already reeling under the
combined impact of global slowdown and the
possible fallout of the US attacks.

Henkel Sells Cognis
for Euro 2.6 BN
(October 2001 issue
of PRA's News of the Month)
Henkel has sold its speciality chemicals business
to Schroder Ventures and Goldman Sachs Capital
Partners for euro 2.6BN in one of the largest
leveraged buyouts in the chemicals industry.
Under the terms of the agreement, the buyers can
withdraw from the deal within the next two months
in view of market uncertainties.
Cognis had sales of euro
3.2BN last year, accounting for 23% of Henkel's
turnover. Henkel now intends to concentrate on
consumer products, which include Schwarzkopf hair
products, Svit home dry cleaning and Persil
laundry products in Germany. Henkel's decision,
following the disposal of its stake in the
Henkel-Ecolab joint venture, in effect ends its
conglomerate structure.
Cognis reported a 4% increase in its sales to
euro 1.5BN in the first half of 2001, with
operating profit rising by 3.6% to euro 116M.
Cognis distinguishes itself among the speciality
