Global Market Trends
According to The Chemark Consulting Group, the global powder coatings market
grew in value from $4.317 billion in 2005 to $4.547 billion in 2006. Ten
years ago the world consumption of powder coatings was valued at $2.1
billion—46% of the dollar value today. In terms of tonnage, powder coatings
grew from 1.696 billion tons in 2005 to 1.785 billion tons in 2006.
“The global market for powder coatings will continue to grow at rates higher
than liquid coatings as a group at approximately 4.5-5.1% annually on a
pounds basis, with Asia-Pacific leading the way driven primarily by growth
in China,” said Phil Phillips, managing partner, The Chemark Consulting
Group. “Asia-Pacific will grow between 8.2-10% while China will grow at over
12% in the next five year period. Western Europe and North America will grow
at 3.5%.”
More lead-paint toy recalls
coming, source says
CNN) -- More toys with lead-contaminated paint will be recalled in the
coming weeks, a source with knowledge of the announcements said Wednesday.
The House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection has posted
letters from retailers on its Web site that name toys the companies found
contain a hazardous amount of lead. The toys have not been recalled yet and
may be on store shelves.
Target spokeswoman Amy Von Walter said she told the subcommittee her company
had voluntarily recalled 1,854 Sunny Patch Safari Children's Chair toys on
August 30. She said Target had discovered the toys' paint contained more
than 30 times the amount of lead allowed by U.S. law.
A formal recall order has not been issued, Von Walter said, but Target is
working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to that end. See what
toys have been recalled »
The House panel requested similar information from 19 toy companies that had
sold toys found to contain illegal levels of lead -- including Mattel,
Target, Dollar General, and Tween Brands.
A two-day hearing on child protection and toy safety began Wednesday with
the testimony of officials from the safety commission -- acting Chairman
Nancy Nord and Commissioner Thomas Moore -- and Mattel CEO Bob Eckert. <more>
Valspar Corporation
Teknos has signed an agreement for selling its coil coating business, Teknos
Nova Coil (TNC) Oy, to the US-based Valspar Corporation. The turnover of the
coil business is about €35 million. The coil coating business has belonged
to Teknos' daughter company, which was established in 2005 when Teknos
bought Tikkurila's coil business. Coil coatings, however, had been part of
the Teknos product range since the late 1970s.
Valspar acquires all of the shares in TNC. People related to Teknos coil
coating business and coil laboratories will transfer to TNC and together
with TNC's present personnel continue as employees under Valspar's
ownership. Employees working in coil production will remain with Teknos and
will be reorganised to work in other production units.
Teknos has had a strong market position in coil coatings in Nordic
countries, Russia and CIS countries. "Coil customers, like the steel
industry, are concentrated and the markets are global. In the future, in the
globally merging coil business, the successful development of the business
is easier for a global company like Valspar. Valspar, the leading coil
producer in the world, was a good company to continue the coil coating
business and Teknos can concentrate on its less capital-intensive core
businesses. The capital Teknos releases from the sale will be directed to
the development of the business in Eastern Europe and Russia as well as to
the development of the present business segments (General Industry/Heavy
Duty, Industrial Wood, Powder Coatings, Mineral Coatings, Architectural
Coatings) in their own market areas", says Pekka Rantamäki, CEO of the
Teknos Group.
Ulf Koivula, President of TNC, continues as the President of the combined
TNC-Valspar companies and is responsible for TNC-Valspar's coil business
across the whole of Europe. (Source: Teknos)
Ford Motor Co. to Install Novel
Paint Emissions Conversion System
Ford Motor Corp. plans to install a patented Fumes-to-Fuel system at its
Oakville, Ontario, assembly plant—an innovative system designed to convert
emissions from its paint shop into electricity.
"The Oakville installation is the first of its kind in the world to harvest
emissions from an automotive facility for use in fuel cell," said Kit
Edgeworth, Ford's abatement equipment technical specialist for
manufacturing. "It is the greenest technology and offers the perfect
solution to the industry's biggest environmental challenge traditionally."
How it works: The system will launch with an internal combustion engine
before shifting to a stationary large-scale fuel cell to boost
effectiveness. The fumes from the paint solvent will get transformed into
300 kilowatts of green energy. (Carbon beads capture the VOCs for use in the
fuel cell, which converts it to electricity.) According to Edgeworth, it was
developed as a responsible way to remove VOCs from the painting operations'
exhaust air.
The technology was launched as a pilot installation at the Dearborn Truck
Plant using a 5 kilowatt DFC300MA fuel cell, which Ford purchased from
Danbury, Conn.-based FuelCell Energy, Inc. A year later, Ford installed
installed technology at its Michigan Truck Plant using a 50 kilowatt
Stirling engine to generate electricity.
In addition, the Oakville location will launch with a 120 kilowatt internal
combustion engine before shifting to the 300 kilowatt fuel cell, which is
expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 88% and eliminate nitrogen
oxide emissions completely.
"By using the end-products of enamel and clear coat operations, we are
eliminating the exhaust of thousands of tons of nitrous and sulfur oxides as
well as CO2—a major greenhouse gas," said Andrew Skok, executive director of
FuelCell Energy's strategic marketing. "As this application shows, the fuel
flexibility of our DFC300MA opens up an entirely new, very large market for
us."

EFD Introduces New
Solvent & UV-cure Adhesive Coating Systems
East Providence, RI - EFD, Inc., a subsidiary of Nordson Corporation
introduced the new Relius Tube Coating Systems -- a fast, foolproof way to
apply accurate, repeatable amounts of solvents or UV-cure adhesives on
tubing, fittings and other cylindrical components.
The compact, pneumatically operated benchtop systems will provide medical
device makers and other manufacturers with a more cost-effective, productive
alternative to slow, messy and inconsistent manual fluid application.
Instead of dipping components into open containers of solvent or applying
UV-cure adhesive by hand, the operator simply inserts the end of the tubing
or fitting into an applicator port on the side of the Relius System. The
interior and/or exterior diameter will be coated with the correct amount of
fluid every time, regardless of who performs the operation. Each Relius
System can be configured with up to four applicator ports to handle multiple
pieces or different diameters of tubing <more>

Silver,
iridescence are favourite car colours - until the next big thing
(AP) — Tomorrow's cars will scrimp on fuel, envelop us in safety, guide us
to our destinations, impress us with intuitive features and comfort us with
ergonomics we can't believe we ever lived without.
But for all that, these evolutions will never shield us from one of the most
important questions a driver faces when choosing a car: Which colour?
And more specifically, if current trends hold: Which shade of silver?
In two separate surveys by major auto paint suppliers, silver remains the
most popular colour for new cars of all kinds in North America, capturing 24
per cent of the overall market in 2006 by PPG Industries' numbers; 19 per
cent in that year according to DuPont.
It's the seventh year running for silver, an unusually long term for a top
hue.
But even the stateliest shade of grey is going through a transformation
that's indicative of future trendy car colours: shifting, iridescent hues,
which subtly change as you walk around the car or see it in different light.
Put another way, that new Mercedes, resplendent as usual in tried-and-true
silver, may flash a hint of radiant blue or subtle green as it whizzes by.
"You're going to see a colour, and you're going to do a double-take," says
Karen Surcina, colour marketing technology manager for DuPont.<more>
