Zero-VOC paint
California Paints has announced the launch of Elements zero-VOC paint.
Elements is an environmentally-preferable, premium quality paint. Through
advanced product design and innovation, new Elements zero-VOC paint solves
quality problems facing most eco-friendly paints. Elements finishes are
specifically formulated to provide one-coat coverage and an ultra
long-lasting, cleanable finish.
Conserving our valuable natural resources is of the utmost importance to us;
we adopt these practices across the company and in the products we bring to
market,” said Peter Longo, CEO of California Products Corporation. The
Elements interior paint line includes a primer, a ceiling white and three
interior finishes.
Elements is the first environmentally-preferable interior paint line to
contain Microban technology, a unique anti-bacterial additive that creates
an internal germ-proof barrier within the paint formulation. Elements
finishes are also the perfect choice for those with odour sensitivity.
A commercial grade zero-VOC environmentally-preferable interior product-line
marketed under the name Envirotech will be launched in parallel with
Elements.
Akzo Nobel to expand sales of greener products AMSTERDAM (Reuters) -
Dutch paint and chemical group Akzo Nobel is betting on its
environment-friendly products to keep up with increasing global demand and
head off raw materials shortages, its chief of sustainability says.
"Sustainability is a precondition for economic success nowadays. Companies
that are able to contribute to economic growth at a lower input of raw
materials and energy are the winners of the future," Akzo Nobel's Director
of Sustainability Andre Veneman told Reuters in an interview.
Veneman said 18 percent of Akzo Nobel's revenue consists of sustainable
products, and the company is aiming for 30 percent by 2015.
"We develop products that are produced with lower energy but also offer
energy efficiency to our clients," Veneman said.
He said the company had made a 30 percent cut in energy use since 1990,
saving 200 million euros a year at current energy prices.
The world's biggest paint company and producer of brands such as DuLux,
Sikkens and Flexa needs high-margin products to offset margin pressure due
to slowing housing markets in the United States and Europe.
Second-quarter margins on earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and
amortization (EBITDA) from continuing operations and before incidentals
dropped to 10.8 percent from 11.3 due to the weak housing conditions, and
the company said markets would be soft until 2009.
One of the company's sustainable products is Intersleek 900, a paint for
ships' hulls that allows large vessels to pass more efficiently through the
water, reducing fuel consumption and transport costs by at least 6 percent.
The paint costs five times more than a conventional hull coating, but could
deliver up to $2.5 million savings in five years for a typical vessel, Akzo
Nobel estimates<more>
Biocides, Fungicides and Algaecides Update
The movement to low- and
zero-VOC coatings has accelerated the conversion to a new generation of
biocide products.
The continued demand for coatings systems with low- and zero-VOC content has
given biocide manufacturers the opportunity to provide new products and
services.
“The movement to low- and zero-VOC coatings has accelerated the conversion
to a new generation of biocide products,” said Donald A. Shaw, vice
president development, Troy Corp. “As coating manufacturers develop products
with new polymer systems, biocide manufacturers must adapt their offerings.
There are higher solids content biocides in response to the need for low-
and zero- VOC, active ingredients formulated in technologically advanced
products. As a side effect, the reduction of VOCs creates an increased
requirement for wet state preservation. This coupled with the trend away
from formaldehyde containing biocides creates an opportunity for new product
offerings and value-added services.”<more>.
DSM Powder Coating Resins PRESS RELEASE
Zwolle, 22 September, 2008
DSM Powder Coating Resins launches new technology platform Uralac® Corres
responds to growing market demand for eco-friendly protective metal coating
DSM Powder Coating Resins today launched Uralac® Corres – a new technology
platform, based on breakthrough innovative polyester resins for corrosion
protective coatings. The first product from this line, Uralac® P 7604 is
specifically developed for top coat and primer applications and provides
exceptionally good corrosion protection in metal coating.
For top coat applications, the unique Uralac® Corres technology offers the
possibility to significantly reduce and sometimes completely eliminate
chemical pre-treatment steps. What this means for professional coaters is
that with Uralac® Corres the metal coating process can be made easier.
This new technology brings another big advantage to the coating process.
Through the reduction of pre-treatment chemicals used, less process waste is
created, and so Uralac® Corres can contribute to a significant reduction of
the metal coating process impact on the environment. Formulated as a primer,
Uralac® Corres can replace epoxy. The performance of epoxy-free Uralac®
Corres is equal to or better than conventional epoxy-based systems, but with
a much better environmental footprint. As additional benefit Uralac® Corres
reduces the risk of delaminating between layers - a traditional drawback of
epoxy-based primers.
Whether used as a top coat, or as a primer application Uralac® Corres is a
polyester resin for corrosion protective coatings that increases operational
efficiency in an eco-friendly way. Patrick Niels, Business Unit Director DSM
Powder Coating Resins comments: “We specifically developed Uralac® Corres to
respond to the growing market demand for more environmental friendly coating
systems. Uralac® Corres stands for eco-friendliness and superior performance
and opens a new window of opportunity for corrosion protective coatings. Its
introduction will further strengthen our position as leading sustainable
supplier to the powder coating industry.”

A fresh look at car paint Noxious paint fumes
and the whirring of agitating paint cans are conspicuously absent at
Wilson's Auto Collision Inc.
The lack of traditional smells and sounds of an auto body shop doesn't mean
owner Ray Wilson doesn't have any work. It means he's joined a growing
industry trend.
A few months ago, Wilson stopped using solvent-based paint to repair damaged
vehicles at his 22-year-old shop on East Platte Avenue and started using
water-based paint.
Although European automakers have been applying water-based paint on new
vehicles for more than a decade and domestic car manufacturers have jumped
on board in the last few years, the more environmentally friendly product is
just now making its way into the automotive aftermarket.
Auto body shops only recently started switching because water-based products
weren't readily available from manufacturers and what was on the market was
expensive, said Dale Francis, body shop manager at Red Noland Collision
Center.
Now, "it's a break-even deal," said Francis, who said his shop plans to
change systems by the end of this year. "It's a great marketing tool if you
can combine waterborne with recycling in your shop - it attracts people who
are green-conscious."
Only a handful of collision repair shops in Colorado use water-based paint,
said Richard Turner, a Colorado territory manager for PPG Industries, which
manufactures automotive finishes. Wilson's shop is the first in southern
Colorado. <more>

Plant owner charged with
dumping hazardous waste
St. Louis Business Journal
Paul Fredericks and his company Usona Metal Finishing Co. were indicted on
federal charges involving the illegal transportation, storage and discharge
of hazardous waste at the company’s Cuba, Mo., plant, U.S. Attorney
Catherine Hanaway said Thursday.
The indictment alleges that in April 2007, the Usona powder coating plant on
Clinton Street ceased operations and that Fredericks, 44, of St. Louis,
directed the illegal transportation of drums of hazardous waste to his plant
in Cuba. Between April 2007 and April 2008, approximately 100 drums of
hazardous waste were illegally stored at the Cuba plant, and in April 2008,
Fredericks allegedly directed the illegal discharge of those pollutants into
the sanitary sewer drain at the Usona plant in Cuba.
If convicted, violations of the Resource Conservation & Recovery Act carry a
penalty range of two to five years prison and/or fines up to $250,000; and
violation of the Clean Water Act carries a maximum penalty of three years
prison and/or fines up to $250,000.<more>
OSHA Strengthens Focus on Reducing
Lead Exposures
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a new
National Emphasis Program (NEP) on August 14, 2008, to further reduce
occupational exposure to lead in painting and other industries the Agency
has targeted.
To help OSHA’s field inspectors implement the new program, the agency
simultaneously issued a new compliance directive, CPL-03-00-009. In effect
since its issuance, the 2008 program replaces the 2001 lead NEP and its
compliance directive, CPL 02-00-130.
According to the new compliance directive, the industries OSHA is targeting
for increased evaluation of occupational lead exposures are based on blood
lead level data that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and
Health gathered in 2002 for its Adult Blood Lead Epidemiology and
Surveillance Program.
The modern formula isn't likely to be in cookbooks because the ingredients
aren't exactly tasty. According to Paul Bryson, director of research and
development at professional nail care company OPI Products, nail polish also
contains adhesive polymers, such as tosylamide-formaldehyde resin, that
ensure the adherence of nitrocellulose to the nail surface. Plasticizers,
such as camphor, embed between polymer chains, spacing them such that the
polish is flexible and will not easily crack or chip.<more>
Paint producers develop
eco-friendly products
Paint manufacturers and distributors in the UAE are developing
environment-friendly products, which will be able to withstand the region's
climatic conditions.
But they say it will take another two years to make their products 100 per
cent green. This will involve completely eliminating volatile organic
compounds (VOCs), chemicals that can have short and long-term health
effects. Paints and finishes are among the leading causes of indoor air
pollution as they release low-level toxic emissions into the air for years
after they are applied.
Studies have revealed conventional paints manufactured from ingredients
synthesised from petrochemicals result in non-degradeable and sometimes
highly toxic waste.
But Peter Holyoak, Quality Assurance Manager at Jotun Paints, says it is
possible to make water-based paints that are completely green. "One of the
challenges is to convert those products that do not meet the regulations and
ensure they retain the quality to meet the harsh Middle Eastern climatic
conditions," he said.
Most manufactures have not yet completely eliminated the use of VOCs which,
until recently, were required to ensure paint performed well. Most have
succeeded only in reducing the percentage of VOCs to a minimum and zero-VOC
paints will not become available in the UAE for some time.
Murtaza Challawala, Manager, Marketing and Business Development at Al Gurg
Leigh's Paints, said a more than 60 per cent of his company's products
contained low amounts of VOCs.
"The solvents are harmful to both the person painting and end-users," he
said. "The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (Leed) criteria for
architectural paints call for a VOC content of less than 50g per litre. In
most of our products we maintain it as low as 19g to 22g per litre."
Dulux, which is exclusively supplied throughout the Middle East by Al Gurg
Leigh's Paints, applies Leed standards to all its paints and is already more
than 75 per cent of the way towards reaching targets laid down for 2010.
"Ours is the first paint company in the UAE to become a member of the US
Green Building Council," said Challawala. "At present only 60 per cent of
our products meet the low VOC criteria, but by 2010 we are planning to
completely turn green. We ensure there is zero per cent of mercury or lead
in our products."
Meanwhile Holyoak said Jotun was in talks with Dubai Municipality with a
view to developing a new set of green standards. The municipality was
developing the guidelines in consultation with a number of players in the
industry.
"Our involvement is with regard to setting standards for the paint
industry," Holyoak said.

New development in
powder coating - Electrosmart Powder Hose from Mitsuba.
The new Electrosmart Powder Hose has many advantages that it will
bring to your powder coating process.
The Electrosmart Powder Hose increases the charge received by the
powder. Here's how:
Powder carried through the powder hose to spray gun gets a positive
electrostatic charge due to friction between the powder & hose inner
surface. Therefore although a full 100KV negative charge has been
applied at the powder gun tip, the powder gets a reduced charge as
it has been already positively charged in the hose. This results in
unnecessary over spray.
Mitsubas NEW ELECTROSMART powder hose is the perfect solution to
this problem.
The Electrosmart hose has a conductive strip running within the hose
body. The hose is earthed though an earthing contact on the powder
pump.
Advantages with the New Electrosmart Hose:
Fast and clean colour change with Smart Bullet supplied with
Electrosmart Powder Hose.
Increase powder coverage.
Longer life for powder pipe.

DLV
Technology
With It, Your
Process Control Can Be Even Better Last
year Nordson set a precedent forcoating performance and
efficiency when we
debuted our revolutionary ®
HDLV (High-Density
powder, Low- Velocity air) technology with the original ®
Prodigy powder coating system.
Since then others followed Nordson with their technology,
calling it dense-phase powder coating. Yet, while they may sound
the same, they aren’t.
What’s the difference? Nordson
HDLV technology is a completely new and unique HDLV pumping and
spray gun technology, not just the pumping portion of
dense-phase adapted to conventional spray guns. With Nordson
HDLV, you attain the full benefit potential of dense-phase
powder coating.
Nordson HDLV technology focuses on dense-phase powder transport
and application. It improves the speed of application with better
transfer efficiency by providing a much softer, more
highly-dense-with-powder spray pattern than is obtained using
conventional venturi style pumps. HDLV also monitors incoming
compressed air pressure and automatically compensates for
outgoing flow air.
And
the
benefits of using HDLV technology are significant. It delivers
better uniformity of coating, since less variation in air flow
results in less variation in powder flow. And less variation in
powder flow means you’ll use less powder. Plus, you’ll have
greater repeatability – in other words – fewer rejects and less
rework. Want to know

FBE (Internal Pipe Coating) By
S.R.Chaphekar Internal FBE coating is more critical as we have to take care of the LEL and
UEL (Lower explosive limit and Upper explosive limit). For example a pipe of
1000 mm dia. And a speed of 6 mts. / min needs 30 kg/ min of powder output
from the gun; in the confined space this can have booth the limits at one
place or other. The obvious solution is inert gas atmosphere. This is
achieved by using Nitrogen as operating gas for spraying the powder. A
schematic diagram is shown bellow. The pipe is taken from the storage bay to
blasting bay. Centrifugal blasting is used in most of the cases. After
blasting the pipes are cleaned by compressed air, to remove the remaining
shots etc. A passivating unit can now be inserted in the pipe and the
passivating solution is sprayed by centrifugal sprayer.
Now the pipe is transferred to coating bay. A induction heating jig is
passed over the pipe and the temperature is raised to 300 deg. C . a powder
spray head is moving in the pipe and is spraying powder inside. Centrifugal
spray ensures uniform and high speed powder particles impinging on the
surface, To get a uniform and pinhole free surface. If need be electrostatic
force can be added to the powder particle simultaneously. As the set up has
to pass through 300 deg C. temperature zone the boom carrying the umbilical
cord is insulated and cooled by cooled air. Special centrifugal spray head
with multiple edges is used to deliver the large quantity of powder.
The pipes can now be sent for external coating as to conserve the heat

click here More U.S. demand expected for paint and coatings U.S. demand for paint and coatings is expected to expand 3.1% annually to
$23 billion in 2012, a new market study projects. Volume gains are projected
to accelerate from the sluggishness of 2002-07, when an economic
slowdown—combined with high raw material costs and stringent environmental
regulations—took a toll on the U.S. paint and coatings industry.
The market share held by traditional solvent-based coatings will continue to
erode as these products are replaced by water-based, high solids, powders
and other non-solvent coatings. Going forward, however, growth will be aided
by an improving outlook for both construction and manufacturing activity.
These and other trends are presented in Paint & Coatings, a new study from
The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland,OH-based industry market research
firm.
Architectural paint represents the largest segment of the overall paint and
coatings market, accounting for approximately half of demand in both volume
and value terms. The residential market will continue to account for the
vast majority of architectural paint demand and will benefit from rebounding
growth in residential construction, as well as a significant turnaround in
new housing starts through 2012.<more>
First Nanos would have been
Berger red Kolkata-based paints major Berger Paints India had just finished painting
three Nano cars red when Mamata Banerjee's agitation forced Tata Motors to
suspend work at Singur.
“We painted the three cars barely 15 days ago and engineers from Pune
approved it. We have already supplied the first batch of 500 litres of red
paint,” said Subir Bose, managing director of Berger, the country’s
second-largest paint manufacturer.
Berger's business with Tata Motors amounts to Rs 50 crore, supplying paint
to the Tatas' Jamshedpur and Ranjangaon plants.
“At Singur for the Nano car, we got the contract to supply red paint. We
were to supply 1,000 litres in all, which would paint 300 cars,” added Bose.
The first batch of the Nano is to come out in six colours including red (the
most popular colour for small cars), white and metallic silver.
Bose is “very saddened” at the Singur deadlock and said that if the Tatas
pull out, it will have a negative impact on industry in West Bengal. “The
world is watching and investors will never touch West Bengal ever if the
Tatas leave. It will have a disastrous effect on the state.” So, what's the
solution? “I am an optimist and the brinkmanship of the highest order is
being played out. Hopefully, people will see reason and pull back from the
brink,” he said. <more>
Govt halts work at Dow
Chem site in Pune
Pune, Sept. 27 The Maharashtra Government has issued orders to stop
construction work for a month on research and development centre being set
up by Dow Chemicals International Pvt Ltd near Chakan.
In a decision that comes in the wake of stiff opposition to the R&D Centre
at Shinde Vasuli from villagers in the region, a committee headed by a
retired High Court judge is being appointed to look into the issues
involved.
The committee will submit its report in a month’s time, following which a
decision will be taken on the matter by the State Government.
The construction of the centre, being set up with an investment of Rs 400
crore on 100 acres leased to the company by MIDC, began in January.
However, there have been several instances of protests by villagers who fear
that hazardous chemicals will be produced here and lead to pollution of
water bodies and soil in the region.<more>
The U.S. and European airline
industries are flying through rough turbulence. When it comes to airplanes, the coatings that go on them represent a highly
technical challenge for paint makers as they are the most demanding of all
paint systems. They need to be able to deal with temperatures ranging from
-48°F in the air to 120°F on the ground, as well as having to withstand
strong UV exposure at 30,000 feet. In addition to coping with extreme
temperature fluctuations they must resist cracking due to rapid changes in
air pressure. They also need to resist erosion from air drag and deflect the
impact of dust traveling at 500 mph, which has an effect similar to
sandpaper. On the ground, aircraft coatings also have to withstand contact
with aggressive fluids such as fuel, deicing fluids and hydraulic liquids.
That’s not all. Airplanes also have to look good. Attractive colors and
unique paint schemes are how we’re able to identify and distinguish one
airline from another. We can all tell the difference between Continental and
FedEx carriers at a glance<more>
U.S. Industrial Output Dips in
August
U.S. industrial output dipped 1.1% in August due to a big drop in auto
production and a slide in utilities output. The fall-off, which exceeded
estimates, was the biggest decline in industrial production since September
2005.
Leading the drop-off was automotive output, which fell 12%—the most in a
decade. (Ironically, the slump in motor vehicle and parts production
followed a 2.5% gain the prior month, the report said. Auto manufacturers
assembled just 8.19 million vehicles at an annual pace last month—the fewest
since April 1991.) Factory output, which accounts for about four-fifths of
industrial production, dropped 1% after a 0.1% increase the prior month.
Production at utilities fell 3.2%, while mining output, which includes oil
drilling, decreased 0.4%. Shutdowns in the Gulf of Mexico as Hurricane
Gustav approached may have contributed to the drop, analysts said.
Analysts believe the declines are closely tied to slowing demand, which is
being manifested in manufacturer layoffs. Factories eliminated 61,000 jobs
last month, the biggest decline in five years, Dept. of Labor figures showed
on Sept. 5. The drop included a loss of 39,000 jobs in auto-making and parts
industries. Other recent reports show American manufacturers have become
more cautious as consumer spending weakens. The Institute for Supply
Management's factory index fell in August for the first time in three
months, the group reported on Sept. 2.

PPG Introduce Duranar Powder Coatings for Architectural Aluminum PPG
Industries’ industrial coatings business has introduced Duranar powder
coatings for architectural aluminum. The coatings are an extension of the
existing line of Duranar liquid coatings and are engineered for monumental
architectural applications such as building panels, curtain walls and
storefronts.
Made using Kynar 70-percent polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) resin technology,
Duranar powder coatings have the environmental benefits of a zero-VOC powder
coating. They also have the same durability, color and gloss retention, and
chalk, corrosion and stain resistance as Duranar liquid coatings,
outperforming competing powder coatings manufactured with similar resins.
Duranar powder coatings are formulated with color pigmentation that is
screened extensively and has a 40-year track record of performance and
durability on thousands of buildings around the world, in virtually every
type of climate. Also, Duranar powder coatings are applied using a
proprietary, multi-coat system with a primer and a hard powder-film topcoat.
This produces a thermoplastic bond between the coating and the metal
substrate that delivers unequalled protection, adhesion and colorfastness,
even in extreme environments such as seacoast exposure.
Duranar powder coatings are available exclusively through members of the PPG
Certified Applicator Program (PPG/CAP), an elite group of commercial coating
applicators certified by PPG to apply high-performance fluoropolymer
coatings to aluminum architectural components.<more>
Akzo Nobel plans 3,500 jobs cuts to save £80m
Akzo Nobel, the Dutch owner of
ICI, the paint and chemicals company, plans to cut 3,500 jobs to try to save
more than €100 million (£79.7 million).
The company, which bought
the maker of Dulux paints for £8 billion in January, said that it was taking
aggressive action to cope with a fall in consumer demand for its products.
Hans Wijers, chief executive, said that Akzo Nobel had faced a “tsunami of
raw material price rises” in the past year and was being forced to pass
price rises on to consumers.
The world's biggest paints company employs 43,000 people in more than 80
countries, including 4,500 in Britain in its coatings and paint divisions.
Its plants are located in Tyne & Wear, Leicester, Worcestershire and Slough.
Mr Wijers said that the job cuts would be made across the decorative paints

Rohm and Haas
Rohm and Haas Company
has been designated a National Historic Chemical Landmark by the American
Chemical Society (ACS). The landmark status will be conferred by the world's
largest scientific society during ceremonies in Philadelphia on Sept. 15.
Rohm and Haas' acrylic emulsion technology joins such esteemed company as
flame-retardant cotton, Bakelite plastics, the introduction of nylon, the
creation of Scotch transparent tape, and Tide, the first heavy-duty
synthetic laundry detergent. "It is quite an honor to be recognized as the
key developer of acrylic emulsion technology by such an esteemed
organization as the ACS," said Raj L. Gupta, chairman and CEO, Rohm and Haas
Company. "The pivotal role Rohm and Haas has played reflects the
inventiveness and leadership of both our customers and the thousands of
employees whose work has transformed multiple industries-all the while
eliminating the air pollution caused by the technologies our water-based
chemistry replaced." The chemical landmarks program, established 15 years
ago, acknowledges chemists' roles in expanding frontiers of knowledge,

Powder Coatings
Because of the dual
advantage of durability and environmental friendliness, powder coatings will
likely continue to grow in the years ahead.
The global powder coatings market has grown from $3.6 billion in 2001 to
$4.5 billion in 2006. Asia Pacific has led the globe in growth, while Europe
has been flat and North America has grown at a 3.5% annual rate.
“Today’s powder coatings market is relatively healthy, although the
emergence of small local producers has created over capacity in the
industrial segments, putting pressure on margins,” said Claudio Iurilli,
divisional marketing manager, Jotun Power Coatings. “The raw material price
hikes and the heightened competition in emerging markets are likely to
emphasize this trend even further in 2009.”... <more>

Asian Paints’ top dealers tour
Dubai
Asian Paints paid tribute
to the company’s top dealers in Sri Lanka by taking them on a delightful
tour to Dubai under its “The Spirit of Togetherness” annual trip scheme,
executed for the fourth consecutive year.
Among the highlights of the four-day tour were an evening spent in the
magical deserts of Dubai, a Dhow Cruise dinner, exciting visits to Snow
World, Jumeirah mosque, Burj Dubai and the Sheikh’s Palace. The participants
were also provided an opportunity to shop extensively at Gold Souq and at
the Mall of the Emirates. The group comprised of 101 people.
Asian Paints Lanka Managing Director Joseph Pulikottil said: “Dealers
contribute immensely to company’s growth as well as to the development of
the market and this tour was an appropriate expression of our appreciation
of our top dealers in Sri Lanka.” The tour began on a high note when all
participants were welcomed to a gala awards night on the first day of the
tour and rewarded for branch level and islandwide performances on the sales
of new product categories.
The best sales of Royale Luxury Emulsion in the all-island category was
clinched by Mohamed Silas of City Corporation while the Weathertuff Ultima
all-island award went to Tissa Mahanama of Mahanama Paint Centre. Asian
Paints’ top dealers have in previous years toured India, Thailand and
Malaysia as a reward for their support to the company.
Fire log: Fire damages
powder-coating unit, causes brief evacuation
A small fire at New York Wire Co. in York City on Tuesday damaged a
powder-coating unit and forced employees to evacuate for about 30 minutes.
No one was injured, and the damage to the wire factory's equipment was
"minimal," said company supervisor Mark Jones.
The fire broke out about 8:35 p.m. at the company's building at 441 E.
Market St. after a piece of wire melted into a powder-coating unit, igniting
the powder, Jones said.
York City fire crews were on the scene by 8:40, said Lt. Larry Shroyer. By
then, the building's carbon dioxide fire-suppression system had contained
the fire.
Firefighters checked the business' floors, ceilings and tower to make sure
the building was safe for employees to go back to work.<more>
