BASF
BASF, citing a sharp fall in demand, has announced plans to suspend
operations at 80 plants worldwide and reduce operations at 100 others in
Europe, Asia, and North America. The moves will affect 20,000 workers. "BASF
was preparing for tough times," said chairman Juergen Hambrecht in a

Netherlands & India. Princess Maxima opens AkzoNobel organised
festival
A major event celebrating India’s finest has begun in the Netherlands today,
with AkzoNobel having played a major role in organizing what promises to be
a spectacular launch event. The company, which is also one of the main
sponsors of the two week Amsterdam India Festival, took the initiative to
stage the official royal opening, which was performed this evening by the
Netherlands’ Princess Máxima. The event has been put together in cooperation
with the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
AkzoNobel CEO Hans Wijers will also be giving a speech during tonight’s
festivities, when he will briefly highlight the company’s growing presence
in what is one of the world’s fastest growing economies.
Reference will be made to Powder Coatings supplying sustainable products to
Indian vehicle manufacturer Tata, while Wijers will also point to Functional
Chemicals supplying the country’s movie industry with an
environmentally-friendly product used for film processing.
The chairman is no stranger to such ceremonies, having spoken at the launch
of the Amsterdam China Festival (also sponsored by AkzoNobel) which took
place in 2005.
Being the largest paint and coatings manufacturer in the world, the company
has ensured that tonight’s launch will be as bright and vibrant as possible
– a celebration of the Indian love of color, light, sound and vision.<more>
Akzo Nobel profits drop in Q3
ICI integration wipes 23% off third quarter profits with
‘incidental’ and ‘one off charges’.
Higher than anticipated costs as a result of the acquisition of ICI earlier
this year, have taken Dutch chemical group Akzo's profits down to €157m from
€203m in 2007.
These include 'other' costs of €72m and incidental charges of €79m, which
have resulted in the reduced total net income for the third quarter.
The sale of ICI went through in January for £8bn, although Akzo Nobel has
since announced around 3,500 job cuts to cope with 'deteriorating global
economic conditions' and a drop in demand for its paint brands in the UK and
US.
However, Akzo's Q3 report also revealed a 5% increase in revenue for
decorative paints, with a revenue growth of 3% achieved in Europe despite a
difficult UK market.
Akzo Nobel chief finance officer Keith Nichols said: "All three business
areas achieved underlying growth. This is solid proof of the strong
positions Akzo Nobel holds in diverse, highly attractive predominantly
low-cyclical sectors with good growth potential. <more>
Perstorp lays off employees in
Sweden
The Perstorp Group needs to lay off 105 employees in Sweden as a result of
the lack of orders of certain specialty chemical products and as part of a
global rationalization scheme. "Demand has fallen rapidly in recent months
and nothing points to a quick improvement in the order intake. We have
probably not hit the bottom of the recession yet," says CEO Bo Dankis.
"Especially affected are the automotive and construction industries, which
are where many of Perstorp's products end up." Of the 105 employees, 68 work
in Perstorp and Helsingborg and 37 in Stenungsund and Nol. Perstorp has
around 1000 employees in Sweden.
Next cool car color: blue
Bored with the same bland silver and white-colored cars dominating

NEW YORK — Bored with the same bland silver and white-colored cars
dominating the highways? Worry not. Blue is the car color of tomorrow.
Automotive paint supplier PPG Industries has issued its annual forecast of
popular car colors. Blues, particularly more vibrant, richer, complex blues,
will take on a more important role in car styling, said Jane Harrington,
PPG's manager of color styling for automotive coatings.
"It's one of those colors that complements vehicle shapes," Harrington said.
"It's a globally acceptable color. It doesn't have any bad connotations."
PPG, based in Troy, Mich., infers future car colors from trends in a wide
variety of areas, including fashion, interior design and consumer products.
In fact, color is making its way into a growing number of consumer markets,
Harrington said, with customizable color now an option with cellphones,
kitchen appliances and even washing machines.
"Look at home appliances — washers and driers and refrigerators used to be
tan or white," she said. "You can get those in brushed aluminums. You get
those in a variety of hues: red, blue, green, whatever works with the
interior of your home. I think that's affected all aspect of designs."
In the coming years, cars will also see a wider variety of colors — and more
complex ones — thanks to advances in paint technology, Harrington said.
PPG is not the only one that sees blue as the color of tomorrow. In April, a
report by chemicals giant DuPont also predicted a resurgence in blue as a
color choice. They saw an increasing focus on the environment as a reason.<more>
Region's businesses hurt by automakers' misery
The U.S. auto industry, which employs about 2.5 million people, sold 16
million vehicles last year. The industry is on track this year to sell fewer
than 12 million, "a significant drop," said Lave
Likewise, PPG Industries has adjusted to the economic slide, including the
auto industry. PPG makes coatings for vehicles from plants around the world,
although none locally.
It owns 40 percent of local auto glass maker Pittsburgh Glass Works. The
company produces vehicle windshields, and side and rear windows for both
Detroit and the replacement glass market from plants in Tipton, Blair
County; Meadville, Crawford County; and Creighton, its headquarters. The
company declined to release financial data.
PPG will close a coatings plant in Ontario next year and cut 150 jobs to
"help us mirror the fundamental shifts in the automotive industry," said
Vice President Dennis Kovalsky.<more>
Report details terror targets
Barberton companies PPG and JCI Jones are among 101 facilities
listed as most dangerous
More than 1.3 million people could be at risk from a worst-case toxic
gas cloud from two chemical facilities in Summit County, according to a new
report.
PPG Industries and JCI Jones Chemicals Inc., both in Barberton, are among
the 101 chemical facilities listed as the most dangerous in the United
States and potential terrorist targets, the Center for American Progress in
Washington, D.C., said in releasing its report last week.
The group urged the chemical companies to switch from high-hazard substances
to safer, less toxic alternatives and technologies to reduce the threat.
''There is tremendous untapped potential to protect American communities
from chemical terrorism by investing in safer and more secure
technologies,'' said author Paul Orum. ''Site gates and guards may fail. The
only certain way to protect communities is to remove the danger with
available alternatives.''
PPG has a very good safety record, complies with all federal, state and
local regulations, and is not a threat to neighbors, said plant manager Rich
Bauer.
PPG was cited in the report for its use of phosgene in making chloroformate
to produce the plastic resin used in optical lenses.<more>
Jotun targets hospitals, higher
Jotun Powder Coatings (Thailand) will penetrate the hospital market
for the first time and intends to increase sales volumes in China to
maintain growth next year.
The company last month saw signs of a slowdown in its orders from the steel
industry, which contributes 85 per cent of its revenue, managing director
Pornchai Phaungsuwan said.
"The company's powdercoating order volume this month dropped to 400 tonnes
from the average 500 tonnes per month, due to a slowdown in the steel
industry," he said.
Jotun is approaching hospitalfurniture manufacturers to use its powder
coatings, which protect against bacteria. Moreover, the company will hold a
seminar to give information about powder coatings to hospitals.
"Hospitals are a new market that we will penetrate next year. The
healthconscious trend is more popular, and our product can serve this
because the powder coating is a dry coating that is suitable for businesses
associated with health," he said.
He said the company needed to seek new markets to keep its sales growth,
adding that in the past nine months it had enjoyed sales growth of 12 per
cent year on year, higher than the expected growth of 9 per cent. <more>
AkzoNobel targeting growth in India
17 Nov 2008 - AkzoNobel is set to break ground on a new coatings
manufacturing plant in India, signaling the company's ambition to become one
of the country's leading industrial players. The new Industrial Finishes
facility - which will produce coil and specialty plastic coatings - is being
built in Hoskote near Bangalore and is the latest strategic step in a
measured approach to expanding in a region with clear growth potential.
"We are convinced that India will develop into one of the world's economic
powerhouses and it ranks very highly on our list of priority countries for
growth and investment," said AkzoNobel CEO Hans Wijers. "We are already well
represented in India, but as a leading global producer of coatings and
specialty chemicals we are committed to making a significant contribution to
India's continued development."
Wijers added that the company has targeted a substantial increase of its
turnover in India, which currently totals around €200 million.
The new Industrial Finishes plant is being built on an existing AkzoNobel
site, which manufactures marine and protective coatings and powder coatings,
as well as coil coatings. The latest addition will expand capacity for coil
coatings produced primarily for the high performance steel and aluminum
construction markets in India and neighboring countries. Increasing demand
in India for lifestyle goods such as mobile phones and the ability to better
serve global customers located in the region has driven the need to expand
the business' specialty plastics activities. <more>
PVD Coated Bumper on Display
"This team set out in January to prove that PVD could be
successfully applied to a large part application and meet the OEM
requirements of our customer partners," said Rick Pfeifer, Vice President
and Chief Technology Officer at American Trim.
Pfeifer went on to say that "PVD is not new - we see it in many of today's
household applications including faucets and other fixtures within the home.
And, PVD is making it's way onto larger part applications in the automotive
world."
"What is new is how PVD is being applied on the scale presented here. And,
what is exciting is not only the potential for cost savings that this new
process promises but also the "green effect" of what is now a credible
alternative to traditional hexavalent chrome plating."
Jack McKeague, from DuPont CoatingSolutions add, "We are very proud of the
fact that the base coat (DuPont™ Vacuprime™), and top coat are DuPont
products and of the commitment of our mutual technical teams and relentless
pursuit of getting the science right that will propel us going forward."
To learn more about PVD and the efforts of American Trim and DuPont
CoatingSolutions, please contact Jack McKeague from DuPont at 708-921-9073
or John Swigard from American Trim at 937-494-6507.
About Physical Vapor Deposition
Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) is a technology used to deposit thin film
coatings onto Ferrous and Non Ferrous Substrates. PVD is a major departure
from traditional metal plating technologies characterized by an extremely
environmentally friendly footprint.
The process allows for a "chrome-like" finish on virtually any substrate,
while potentially reducing overall costs compared to traditional plating
technologies. <more>
Sun Chemical expands pigment manufacturing capabilities through
joint venture
Sun Chemical and its parent company, DIC Corporation, formerly known as
Dainippon Ink & Chemicals, have formed a joint venture with Lianyungang
Haidi Chemicals, Co. Ltd., a pigment manufacturer in China. The joint
venture, which will be renamed Lianyungang DIC Color Co., Ltd., will
continue to manufacture pigments for paints, coatings, plastics and ink and
sell them through the worldwide sales network of DIC Corporation and Sun
Chemical. The joint venture would eventually lead to an expansion of its
product line to a wider range of organic high performance pigments in the
future.
Kansai Paint
Sime Kansai Paint, the Malaysian outfit in which Kansai has a 60%
share, is to enhance its local portfolio with the inclusion of paints for
the finishing of interior automotive plastic components. Thus far the
business has been concerned with car body and electrodeposition coatings.
The move has been coupled to new facilities being installed for painting,
testing, training and R&D.
Sime Kansai Paint has also embarked upon a marketing drive for its car
refinishes.
The move to diversify into different areas looks to have been prompted by
the global economic slowdown. (Source: Japan Chemical Week, 6 November 2008)
Nippon Paint
Subsequent to Nippon Paint’s domination of the Singaporean DIY paint market,
in which it has amassed a 45% share, the company has confirmed its intention
of entering the Australian decorative (and ship-bottom) paints market
through this arm of its business. The move appears to have been generated as
a result of limitations in the potential market size which are associated
with a small nation such as Singapore.
Nippon has set up a wholly-owned subsidiary in Australia which has been
marketing the Singapore-made DIY paints over the last four months. Local
chain Bunnings, which has 200 stores across Australia, has already started
selling them.
Nippon Paint’s Singaporean capacity includes 3,000 tpa of decorative DIY
paint capacity. (Source: Japan Chemical Week, 6 November 2008)
Akzo Nobel Fined C$3.15 Million in Canada for Price-Fixing
Nov. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Akzo Nobel NV, the world's biggest maker of
coatings and paints, pleaded guilty to criminal charges of fixing
the price of hydrogen peroxide in Canada and was fined C$3.15
million ($2.4 million).
Federal Judge Roger Hughes imposed the fine today at a hearing in
Toronto. Canada's Competition Bureau said an investigation found
that Akzo Nobel and its competitors agreed to fix the price of
hydrogen-peroxide products sold in the country between 1998 and
2001. Hydrogen peroxide is used mainly in the pulp and paper
industry as a bleaching agent.
``Price-fixing agreements deny Canadians the benefits of free and
open competitive markets,'' Sheridan Scott, the competition
commissioner, said in a statement today. ``The Competition Bureau
will take action against businesses engaged in such conduct.'' <more>
