Chromium Clean-up: Honeywell to Pay Millions Settlement reached with state of New Jersey. On June 20, the State of New Jersey reached a settlement with three companies to pay $15 million for clean-up of chromium contamination. Among the companies was Honeywell International, headquartered in Morris Township. Here is the announcement from the state Department of Environmental Protection <more> Ford to Clean Up 40-Year-Old Paint Dump Facing a new HBO documentary on a very old controversy, Ford Motor Co. has agreed to clean up tons of toxic paint sludge that the company dumped decades ago on ground near the Ramapo River, reports say. The airing of Mann v. Ford, scheduled for Monday, July 18, apparently proved the turning point in a 40-year dispute between the car maker and the region’s Ramapough Indians over the toxic 40-acre parcel in Rockland County, NY. The car maker has announced that it will dig out more than 6,500 cubic yards of sludge - enough to fill 325 of the largest dump trucks – from the site, according to CBS Radio and The Record of New Jersey. The land is just north of the auto plant that Ford once operated in Mahway, NJ, near the river and a massive aquifer that provides drinking water to parts of North Jersey<more> Owner of Burned Paint Plant Faces Fines for Unreported Chemicals The owner of a Pennsylvania paint plant is facing fines of up to $25,000 a day for not providing authorities with a mandated list of chemicals and substances stored on site before fire struck his facility. More than 100 firefighters from across the region fought the blaze for more than 10 hours May 14 and 15 at American Biodiesel Energy Inc. and North American Powder Coatings, in Erie, PA. Fire crews were seriously hamstrung in their efforts, however, because they had no information on file from the businesses about what hazardous substances and chemicals were stored inside the 56,000-square-foot facility. Eventually, crews fighting the fire inside the building were ordered outside because of the danger, officials said.<more> |

Ask Joe Powder |
![]() "Ask Joe Powder" "Ask Joe Powder" is a question and answer column authored by Kevin Biller of the Powder Coating Research Group. Mr. Biller has over 30 years experience formulating and manufacturing powder coatings. He welcomes your questions regarding powder coating technology. Please write to: askjoepowder@yahoo.com Kevin Biller The Powder Coating Research Group 15 W. Cherry Street, 3rd Floor Columbus, OH 43215 614-354-11988 www.powdercoatingresearch.com Dear Joe, I hope you had a great weekend with the family and especially the new baby. I have a question for you coming from a colleague that is having a problem with a powder coater out here. She took a table to them that was rusty in some parts and asked them to powder coat it for her. Well, they did and after a few weeks of wear and tear (I believe they keep it outside) it is rusting again. So, they fixed it for her again, but it is rusted again. Long story short any suggestions on what she should do? I guess the table means a lot to the family and she isn't afraid of the costs involved, she just doesn't want it to keep rusting. Thanks, Donna Hi Donna, Yes we had a wonderful weekend and I hope you had one as well. The problem with the premature rusting is a combination of two or three issues. 1.) It would appear that the original rust may not have been completely removed prior to the application of the powder coating. 2.) The metal may not have been chemically pretreated prior to the application of the powdercoating and 3.) The film thickness of the powder may be low or in-continuous in areas. To do this correctly the coater needs to: 1. Clean the metal 100%. I recommend shot blasting (aluminum oxide or silicon carbide). 2. Chemically pretreat the metal before application of the powder. A good jobcoater will have an ironphosphate system that will do a good job if they keep the process in control. 3. Thoroughly coat the table with a high quality powder coating. This sometimes will involve preheatingthe table and spraying the difficult to coat areas while it is still warm. Alternately they can apply twocoats of powder (primer followed by a topcoat). This isn't necessary if the coater is careful in applyingthe powder in the first place. Please tell your colleague that it's really important to ask her coater about how they prepare the metaland control the film thickness. I hope that this helps. Kind regards, Joe Hey Joe, I had just had a smoker powder coated for barbequing. They coated the inside of the smoker (which they were not supposed to do). At what temperatures is regular powdering coating safe? Are there anyfumes that would be released at any certain temps? I am just wondering about general safety, temps don’t reach more than 300°F in the smoker. Thanks in advance, Jerod Hi Jerod, Thanks for the question. Without knowing the exact formulation and its composition I can't unequivocally say that nothing will volatilize from the cured powder. That said I can assure you that the powder coated interior is safe and will not contaminate your smoking process or the products you smoke within it, especially if the surface temperature never exceeds 300°F (150°C). Powder coatings do not generally degrade until around 425 to 450°F (218 to 232°C). Silicone modified powder coatings can typically endure 800 to 1000°F (427 to 538°C). If possible please let me know more about the powder coating that was used and I will comment further. Best regards, Joe |
