Ruling Mixed in AkzoNobel Birth-Defect Suit
A doctor should have been allowed to testify at trial that exposure to AkzoNobel solvents may have contributed to brain damage and birth defects in an employee’s child, the Supreme Court of the State of Washington has ruled. However, the coating company was upheld in alleging that part of the blame was Julie Anderson’s, for not wearing a respirator on the paint mixing line while pregnant.
The complex case raises issues about employees’ personal responsibility for their safety and corporate safety culture. <more>

For a greener tomorrow
''The global paint and coatings industry in association with other environmental bodies are doing their part to build a sustainable and greener environment and have awakened to the need for conserving earth’s rapidly-depleting resources for future generations,'' explains Percy Jijina, Director - Decorative, Jotun India Pvt. Ltd.

He points out that a majority of paints are made of ingredients from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and these ingredients are mostly categorised as neurotoxins and known to cause health hazards. Some paint products can affect the environment to a large extent as for every tonne of paint produced; up to 30 times more waste is generated, while paint production uses enormous amounts of energy.

He explains that it is imperative that thorough research is done before investing in a paint product especially for those with underlying health issues (like asthma and other respiratory conditions, skin and eye sensitivities). These people often find it difficult to live in homes where VOCs are present at high levels although anyone exposed to these compounds is absorbing and inhaling the toxins. However there is very less awareness about the cause of these complications resulting from paints with high VOC content. What are the attributes of an eco-friendly paint? <more>

Coatings That Change Color And Eat Pollution!
Some of the most remarkable new coatings – like color-changing coatings and smog-eating coatings – are applied to metal using the continuous coil coating process. Are you ready for the future?

The Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier, a $28 million cruise ship terminal at the Port of San Diego, features color-shifting coatings by PPG Industries. The company’s Duranar VARI-Cool coatings combine pearlescent pigments with infrared-reflective coatings technology. This combination helps the buildings stay cooler while the coatings change color depending on how light refracts off their surface and the angle from which they are viewed.

Another coating helps buildings clean themselves and eat smog. Using a breakthrough process, Alcoa is introducing a new coil coated architectural panel that continually cleans the metal panels and the air around it. The architectural coating, called EcoClean, has the ability to actively break down pollutants like smog and to convert them to simple compounds that wash away in the rain<more>

We've been following MIT's progress on creating solar cell-coated paper since 2010, and we're excited to report the current findings of the project. What looks and feels like an ordinary sheet of paper with a fine layer of colored rectangles, is no ordinary piece of paper at all - once connected to a couple of wires, it instantly generates solar electricity. Additionally, the technology is almost as cheap and easy as printing a family snapshot from an inkjet printer. You can even fold it up, slip it in your pocket, then unfold it again for later use.<more>

NASA'S Webb Telescope Completes Mirror Coating Milestone
James Webb mirrorsGREENBELT, Md. -- NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has reached a major milestone in its development. The mirrors that will fly aboard the telescope have completed the coating process at Quantum Coating Inc. in Moorestown, N.J.

The telescope's mirrors have been coated with a microscopically thin layer of gold, selected for its ability to properly reflect infrared light from the mirrors into the observatory's science instruments. The coating allows the Webb telescope's "infrared eyes" to observe extremely faint objects in infrared light. Webb's mission is to observe the most distant objects in the universe. <more>

Dear Sir,
I am searching a way to double our production for powder coating division. Presently we have a capacity of 3 ton per shift. We have overhead conveyor with a speed of 1m/m and we are using 3 + 3 automatic spray guns both the sides and we are using it only for 6 meter profiles for our clients. I just want to know that can we hang double line profiles in the same flight bar. So that we can increase the production simultaneously. Both the sides of the two layers can be coated with both the side guns but what about the between areas of both the profile lines. And what should be the minimum distance to be kept between the profile and the spray guns. Waiting for your swift response. We are using Wagner automatic spray guns.

Sumesh Ayyappen
Sales Engineer at Oryx Aluminium Industry S.P.C

Dear Sumesh,

This is an interesting challenge. There are a few ways to increase production of your finishing line. Here is an analysis of options and issues:

By increasing your throughput you not only have to deliver more powder coating to more parts but you must also ensure that your pretreatment/cleaning system can handle the increase and just as important, you must ensure that your oven can cope with the additional load.

First let's talk about mechanically increasing throughput. You can increase part density by hanging more parts per length of conveyor. It is essential that the conveyor can take he added weight. Otherwise you may encounter abnormal wear and failure of the conveyor bearings and frictional surfaces. Another approach is to increase line speed. This may be a better option as you will not be adding more stress caused by weight. If you choose to increase the line speed it is vital to make adjustments in your cleaning/pretreatment process. This may involve installing extra spray nozzles and certainly accommodations for higher consumption of chemicals and waste generation.

A higher line speed will also tax the output of your application system. I recommend that you add a couple guns for additional powder delivery.

Most critical to an increased line speed is ensuring that the powder coating receives adequate time and temperature in the oven. This can probably be accomplished by increasing your oven temperature about 15 to 20 degrees C. It is important to measure the actual part temperature of a fully loaded oven to accurately ascertain powder cure conditions. Most powders can cure with shorter times at higher temperatures. For example a powder that cures at a 20 minutes at 180 degrees C stoving schedule will cure with a 10 minutes at 200 degrees C schedule. Please check with your powder supplier to verify this.

Congratulations on the increase in your business. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Best regards,

Joe
