In 2012, EAD issued 1,427 environmental permits, as well as 259 permits for chemical traders. In addition, the agency conducted 676 inspections of the permitted facilities and 133 inspections for ground water wells. The latest review on diet and the risk of inflammatory bowel diseases (such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease) suggests that of all dietary factors, animal protein from meat and fish is most associated with a higher risk of inflammatory bowel disease. One potential risk factor that I had never heard of, though, was micro- or nanoparticles. Foodstuffs in developed countries contain increasing quantities of microparticles such as titanium dioxide. Titanium dioxide is used by the millions of tons as a whitening/brightening pigment to make white-colored paint, but also as an additive to make white-colored food. It’s added to food so much so that people eating conventional diets may be ingesting a trillion particles of titanium dioxide every day. Asian Paints to acquire Sleek Group; foray into kitchen space Asian Paints to acquire Sleek Group; foray into kitchen space It's always been more about homes than paint so for Asian Paints, moving into providing kitchen solutions is a logical step up the value chain. It has acquired a 51% stake in Sleek Group, a leading organised player in the modern kitchen space. It's the first such step for the decorative paints company following its decision taken in July 2012 to explore opportunities in areas of home improvement and decor. "It may be an un-related business for a paints company, in terms of distribution and manufacturing, but we find it to be a brilliant strategy for Asian Paints as it will now be able to sell a new home-buyer paint, water proofing and a modular kitchen," says Abneesh Roy, associate director, Edelweiss Capital. "To take our brand to the next level in a fairly nascent and unorganised market, we needed a strategic partner to develop our back-end and dealer network", says Rajesh Ahuja, managing director of Sleek International. "We found such partner in Asian Paints, the Indian multinational with a 30,000-dealer network", he adds.<more> Berger Paints subsidiary to acquire architectural paints biz of Sherwin Williams Berger Paints Indias wholly owned subsidiary, Brushworks Paints Ltd, has agreed to acquire the architectural paints business of Sherwin Williams India Pvt Ltd, for an undisclosed sum. In practice the output is governed by lot size, formulation, clean-up & colour change time, breakdowns, maintenance, ambient temperature and worker absenteeism etc. At present we are operating at around 400 tons/month and hope to achieve 600 tons/month in the coming months. The main difference now is the new building, we are gradually moving into, which has been designed for this production and the massive up-gradation of the infrastructure. In addition we have some taken on some very experienced and capable people to ensure quality. We also manufacture Plastic Powder Coatings which are primarily used for wire fabricated products like fences, refrigerator shelves and baskets etc". More on that in our next edition of our newsletter Hit by Re fall, Q4 margins to mirror Q3: Kansai Nerolac After Kansai Nerolac Paints entered in talks with auto companies to raise the paint prices the stock has been rallying substantially. HM Bharuka, MD of the company told CNBC-TV18 that the fall in titanium dioxide prices will benefit decorative paints segment. After Kansai Nerolac Paints entered in talks with auto companies to raise the paint prices, the stock has been rallying substantially. HM Bharuka, MD of the company told CNBC-TV18 that the fall in titanium dioxide (Tio2) prices will benefit decorative paints segment (for household and office premises). When talking about the expectations from Q4 in terms of the combined operating margins, Bharuka says, the company should be able to maintain whatever it has achieved in Q3 and does not think there would be any improvement. Bharuka also mentions that while Tio2 prices have gone down from USD 4200 to USD 2800, rupee depreciation has also affected the profitability of the comapny. Below is the verbatim transcript of HM Bharuka's interview on CNBC-TV18 Q: What is going so right for all the paint companies ? Are you seeing a sudden, sharp fall in titanium dioxide prices? A: May be it is not going right for the others but it is going right for the industry. It is more negative for others than positive for the paint industry as of now. Q: What is the trend in the titanium dioxide prices itself, how have they moved, what is the price this quarter compared to last quarter, has there been a fall in the last few days? A: Too much has been read into the fall in titanium dioxide (Tio2) prices. We need to look at Tio2 prices, from USD 1700-1800 it has gone up to USD 4200 and from there it has come down to USD 2600-2800. That is temporary, infact the prices have started rising again. So, whatever slowdown we are seeing globally and the inventory got created and the result of that Tio2 prices have gone down. However, off late it has risen again. So I don't think we need to read too much into the fall in Tio2 prices as of now.<more> Cytec Industries Inc : Cytec Coating Resins Brings UV/EB Curable Resins and Gelcoat Technologies to JEC Europe 2013 Brussels, February 28, 2013 --Cytec Coating Resins is excited to be participating in the 'JEC Europe 2013' composites show and conference in Paris March 12-14.<more> Epichlorohydrin (ECH) Market Estimated 1,926 Kilo Tons by 2017 The report "Epichlorohydrin (ECH) Market, By Applications (Epoxy Resins, Synthetic Glycerin, Water Treatment Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals) and Feedstock (Propylene, Glycerin) - Global Market Trends and Forecast To 2017" defines and segments the global ECH market by volume consumed and revenues generated. Ask Joe Powder |
![]() "Ask Joe Powder" is a question and answer column authored by Kevin Biller of the Powder Coating Research Group. Mr. Biller has over 30 years experience formulating and manufacturing powder coatings. He welcomes your questions regarding powder coating technology. Please write to: askjoepowder@yahoo.com or post your question through the your facebook id http://letsfinishit.com/askjoe.htm Dear Joe; What is the most reliable way to measure transfer efficiency for powder coat? To spray same known amount powder to the plate is a way but not reliable because of the variables such as distance, voltage…What is your suggestion? Best regards Ozlem EKINCI Dear Ozlem, Sorry for the delay in my response - we have been quite busy in the lab lately. There are a few techniques to measure transfer efficiency. The simplest is to set up a fixed gun in your laboratory spray booth and evenly feed powder to the gun. Hang a test panel at a fixed distance from the gun and apply the powder under constant conditions. Specifically: 1. Clamp your spray gun with a ring stand. Set it up inside the spray booth. 2. Tape the trigger to the "on" position. Do this with the gun control turned off. 3. Hang a test panel 20 cm from the discharge of the gun. A 150mm x 300mm test panel is a good size. 4. Set your air velocity and voltage/current. Use standard conditions. 5. Set up a consistent powder feed. This can be with a fluidized hopper or a vibratory feeder. We use a vibratory feeder for best precision. 6. Weigh test panel to 0.1 grams precision. 7. Load feed system (hopper or vibratory feeder) with a prescribed amount of powder. 8. Turn on feed. 9. Turn on spray gun at the control unit. 10. Feed powder for 5 seconds. 11. Weigh test panel. 12. Bake test panel and measure film thickness. The weight of the powder is the most important value to record, however the film thickness offers corroborative data. Another technique is described in detail in the Powder Coating Institute's Technical Brief #10. You can purchase a copy from their website www.powdercoating.org under the "Store & Resources" tab.
