DuPont profits dip; may sell titanium dioxide unit A group of railcars containing titanium dioxide sits at DuPont's Edge Moor facility in May. Titanium dioxide is one of DuPont's major manufacturing products, used as a pigment in paint, medicine, paper and toothpaste. DuPont announced lower earnings this morning as it reported it was considering a sale or spinoff of its Performance Chemicals businesses, which includes the volatile titanium dioxide business. In a release early this morning, DuPont announced it was “exploring strategic alternatives for its Performance Chemicals segment,” which “may include a full or partial separation of each of these businesses from the company through a spin-off, sale or other transaction.” DuPont processes titanium dioxide, a white pigment used in a variety of household products, at its Edge Moor plant.<more> Incident at Valspar closes streets near plant Kankakee firefighters were called this morning to assist Valspar Corp. employees trying to cool an overheated, non-pressurized mixing vessel at the company's 901 N. Greenwood Ave. facility. "The vessel had reached a temperature around 600 degrees," said Chief Ron Young. "We arrived here around 3:45 a.m. We alleviated some of the heat, and then opened the vessel and applied foam and water." He added that inside air quality is at issue, so rotating crews — wearing self-contained breathing apparatus — were planning to remain at the plant until safety was assured. "We rely on plant personnel, in situations like this, and work together with their people," Young noted. Motorists who use north-south crosstown arteries Indiana or Harrison avenues were rerouted while fire department equipment and personnel were in the plant's nearby roadways. Kankakee police issued the closure notice, explaining that the 800-900 blocks of North Harrison and Greenwood would be closed, along with a stretch of East Fair Street. <more> Nippon Paint adds Teflon nonstick technology Nippon Paint has just launched a new product: Nippon Paint Spotless Odorless All-In-One. (June 14, 2013) - Tiny implants to monitor bodily functions or to provide insulin or any other drug based on immediate need would be an advancement in personalized medicine, but a problem inherent in implants is the tendency of the human immune system to recognize the device as an invader and encapsulate it, preventing the device from doing its job. Dr. Carmen Scholz of The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) has been working on the customized synthesis of biocompatible polymers that can coat sensors that are then implanted into the body to cloak them from the immune system, often referred to as a stealth character. "Our research is into anything that you can put onto a device so that the body cannot sense it," Dr. Scholz said. "You've got to make it so the body doesn't even see it." Recent research in which she was involved proved the in-vitro stability and non-toxicity of thin layers of customized block copolymers that coated tiny sensors, which were produced by a collaborator group at the University of Technology in Dresden, Germany. After further testing, the coated sensors could be implanted in patients to sense their blood glucose, carbon dioxide and serum pH levels. The coating utilizes a multi-layer concept that includes a hermetic sealing layer, a chemically inert innermost diffusion barrier for ions and humidity, and a surface layer of amphiphilic block copolymers.<more> Global Titanium Dioxide Pigment Profits Eroded in 2013 The US$16 billion global titanium dioxide pigment industry experienced declining profitability in 2012, with figures that TZ Minerals International Pty Ltd (TZMI) believes are down significantly from the record earnings experienced in 2011. The US$16 billion global titanium dioxide pigment industry experienced declining profitability in 2012, with figures that TZ Minerals International Pty Ltd (TZMI) believes are down significantly from the record earnings experienced in 2011. In the 9th edition of the Global TiO2 Pigment Producers Comparative Cost and Profitability Study, TZMI announced that, according to its annual independent in-depth analysis of the global TiO2 sector, manufacturing cash costs increased substantially in 2012 and are likely to remain elevated during the next two to three years relative to costs prior to 2010. In addition to analysis of 2012 costs and profitability, TZMI has added cost curves for the 2013-2017 period, and added analysis of production sites that now account for more than 99% of cumulative global supply. In 2011, profitability gains were as a result of improved sales pricing resulting from strong demand, limited supply, and low inventories. In 2011, all chloride plants were profitable according to TZMI’s independent analysis. Plants operated by all five of the major global producers (DuPont, Cristal Global, Huntsman Corporation, Kronos Worldwide and Tronox Inc) were in among the 20 lowest cost facilities. Half of the 20 lowest cost plants were located in China.<more> Berger Paints India to announce Q1 results on August 02, 2013 A Meeting of the Board of Directors of Berger Paints India Ltd will be held on August 02, 2013, to consider, the Company's Unaudited Financial Results for the quarter ended June 30, 2013 (Q1 |
Ask Joe Powder |
![]() "Ask Joe Powder" is a question and answer column authored by Kevin Biller of the Powder Coating Research Group. Mr. Biller has over 30 years experience formulating and manufacturing powder coatings. He welcomes your questions regarding powder coating technology. Please write to: askjoepowder@yahoo.com or post your question through the your facebook id http://letsfinishit.com/askjoe.htm PC Summit Brought Together Innovators Focused on Bringing New Technology to Market By: Kevin Biller Well the 2013 Powder Coating Summit is history now. Our goal was to assemble the greatest minds of the powder coating industry for a forum focused on innovation. Once again the gang did not disappoint. Over 100 innovators descended upon Columbus Ohio on June 18 next in powder coating technology and market trends. ![]() This assembly included all aspects of our technology encompassing novel pretreatment schemes, advanced raw materials, new application techniques and emerging market needs. Attendees journeyed from places near and far - Europe, South America, Canada and throughout the United States. Not only did technology aficionados regale the group with new ideas, but representatives from key OEMs engaged the discussions with assessments of where new technology is needed. The first day was all about introducing the fundamentals of powder coating technology spearheaded by a crisp treatise on powder coating chemistry and application basics. A live demonstration of powder coating manufacturing, application and evaluation followed in The PCR Group laboratory. The most memorable nugget gleaned was Ken Kreeger’s (Nordson) admission that the original concept of the powder coating cartridge booth was devised on a bar napkin after a long day of installing a basic application system for a new powder user in the 1970’s. The most productive discourse was no doubt conducted during the multiple opportunities that were available for networking. It was truly rewarding to observe innovators from all aspects of the coating process seated at the same table enjoying a cocktail and some engrossing discussion on emerging technology. The symposium provided a panoply of august speakers covering topics that inspired attendees to envision what’s next in our vaunted technology. Fascinating approaches to substrate pretreatment were offered ranging from novel environmentally safe chemistries to the use of atmospheric plasma to prep plastics. The dye sublimation process of imprinting striking patterns in powder coating finishes was detailed including new processes to decorate three dimensional parts. Powder formulators were treated to new techniques to improve pigment dispersion, catalysis, corrosion resistance and the extension of TiO2. The use of UV-curable powder coatings for non-traditional enduses was described from a military and economic perspective. Game changing thermal spray application processes were detailed including an excellent video depiction of field application. And a committee member of the ASTM task group for powder coating test methodology provided an update of initiatives directed at the development of techniques to measure powder transfer efficiency and economics. In all fifteen presentations were made with the prime goal of inspiring innovators to look beyond the obvious to meet the needs of emerging manufacturing processes and product requirements. Once again we can rest assured that the movers and shakers in the powder coating industry will succeed in bringing new technology to market. I thank the sponsors, exhibitors, speakers and most of all the visionaries who made this forum a triumph of innovation.
