Alarming Levels of Lead Detected in Household Paints
A majority of paints available in India contain alarming levels of lead, a new study revealed.

Alarming Levels of Lead Detected in Household Paints
The study conducted by Toxics Link, an advocacy group that aims for a toxin-free country, looked at 250 samples of enamel decorative paints available in the market. The paints belonged to 147 different brands in India, purchased from Delhi, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat and Haryana.

The tests were conducted by the Certottica laboratory in Italy. The analysis showed that nearly 90 percent of the paints violated recommendations of the Bureau of Indian Standards and contained lead levels above 90 parts per million. The highest lead level recorded was 1,60,000 ppm. Only 26 paints contained lead levels below 90 ppm.

It was found that 111 samples had high lead levels (10,000ppm); 96 samples had lead concentration that ranged between 10,000 and 600 ppm; and about 17 contained lead levels between 600 and 90 ppm. Interestingly, some popular paint brands including Asian Paints, Kansai Nerolac, Shalimar and Berger Paints contained very low levels of lead (between eight and 32ppm), as advertised by the companies. <more>

Paint firms' prices reflect strong prospects
Traction in decorative segment to drive biz of Asian Paints and Berger; Kansai has more exposure to troubled industrial segment

Asian Paints, Berger Paints and Kansai Nerolac Paints put up a good show in the September quarter. This was driven by double-digit volume growth (12-13 per cent) and strong gross margin expansion (up 67-287 basis points). While strong traction in the decorative paints segment and price increases of about four per cent fuelled top line growth, gross margin expansion was driven by benign input costs.

However, Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) margin expansion was pared by higher advertising spends, as well as recent capacity additions and higher forex losses (both typically included in ‘Other Expenses’). Net of both, bottom line growth was still better than the expectations for most of these companies. Positively, the management commentaries from all these entities remained buoyant. Analysts also remain optimistic and believe demand in the decorative segment will hold up in the second half of this financial year, as the marriage season starts (further pushing the repainting demand) and rural income improves due to a better monsoon.

Abneesh Roy, associate director, institutional equities - research, Edelweiss Securities, says: “We expect strong volume growth to sustain for the next two quarters, as companies expand their distribution network in smaller cities and consumers move from unorganised to organised players.” He says the coming marriage season is important, as there are 20 per cent of more marriage dates this financial year, and this could be a big positive for the sector.

However, the industrial paints segment continues to be under pressure, with the weak Index of Industrial Productivity numbers and muted automobile sales. “Decorative paints fared very well and witnessed good growth across geographies, especially in Tier-II and Tier-III cities in the September quarter. The industrial coatings business continues to be affected by the economic slowdown,” said K B S Anand, managing director, Asian Paints.

While Asian Paints and Berger are relatively less impacted from the softness in this segment, Kansai is likely to feel the heat, as the segment accounts for about 45 per cent of its revenue. “We believe decorative paints demand would continue to grow, on the back of sustainable repainting demand. However, automotive paints’ demand would take longer to recover,” believes Sanjay Manyal, analyst at ICICI Securities.<more>

One dead, two hurt in Saki Naka explosion
One person was killed and two persons injured in a blast in a powder-coating unit in Saki Naka, Andheri (East), Sunday, police said. This is the second such incident in Saki Naka this year. An explosion in an industrial unit had killed seven persons on March 30. The owners of both the plot and the factory were arrested.

Police said the explosion took place around 4 am inside Dhanlaxmi Powder Coating, Anis Compound, behind Ajmeri Masjid on the Andheri-Ghatkopar Road. All three persons inside at the time were labourers, police said. While Mohammad Kalam Ahmad (26) and Mohammad Ashfaq Ansari (24) were injured, Sunilkumar Sharma (23) was killed. Ansari was discharged from Rajawadi Hospital, while Ahmad is being treated for minor injuries.

Santosh Singh, 27, the owner of Dhanlaxmi Powder Coating and Dharmendra Jaisawar, 30, who owns the plot on which the unit stands, were arrested.

"The three were operating a container used in coating metal furniture under high pressure and high temperatures. Pressure build-up might have triggered the explosion," said senior inspector Prasanna More. He added that the unit was illegal.<more>

BASF to supply paints for Mercedes-Benz Sprinter in Russia
Logo - BASF - The Chemical Company
Mercedes-Benz Vans and BASF have joined forces in the growth market of Russia. BASF is supplying all of the paints for the recently launched production of the Sprinter Classic van. Mercedes-Benz Vans manufactures the Sprinter Classic for the Russian market in cooperation with the Russian partner GAZ at the Gorky automotive plant in Nizhny Novgorod, around 400 kilometers east of Moscow. For the finish, the manufacturers are using 100 percent BASF products, both for the e-coat and for primers, topcoats and clearcoats.

“We are very pleased that Daimler AG has chosen us. The supply contract is an additional milestone in the partnership, which has connected our two companies in both the passenger car and commercial vehicle segments for many years and demonstrates the trust Daimler places in our products and services,” said Carsten Vietze, Coatings Account Manager for Daimler Van & Truck & Bus Europe at BASF. “With the supply contract, we are strengthening the market position of the entire BASF Group in the growing Russian market.”

The paint system for the Sprinter Classic stands out for its high level of robustness, a property that is especially important for commercial vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz van. For the new paintline, in addition to the e-coat, primer and clearcoat, BASF suppliers three metallic and three solid colors.

BASF is a long-standing partner of Daimler for passenger cars and commercial vehicles in all regions. In addition to the complete product portfolio, ranging from e-coat to clearcoat, the company offers a wide range of services. In 2012, the partnership with BASF in the truck and bus segment was recognized with the Daimler Supplier Award.

The Sprinter Classic is the first vehicle produced in cooperation between Mercedes-Benz Vans and GAZ. The Sprinter is one of the most successful van models in the world. In 1995, it replaced the Mercedes-Benz T1 and since then has been on roads worldwide.

Demand is strong in small towns: Berger Paints
We have just completed commissioning our largest, Rs 230-crore plant at Hindupur in Andhra

With a consolidated turnover of over Rs 3,300 crore last fiscal (2012-13) and more than a dozen manufacturing facilities in India and abroad, Kolkata-based Berger Paints is the second largest player in the Indian paint industry.

In an interview to Business Line, Abhijit Roy, Managing Director and CEO of the company, discusses the outlook for Indian and overseas business.

How did the July-September quarter fare?

We should do reasonably well this quarter (July-September).

Industrial side, which accounts for 20 per cent of Berger’s turnover, is not doing well because of slowdown. There are payment issues too. This has impacted sales.

The remaining 80 per cent of our turnover comes from decorative paints (home) segment. This business is growing, riding on higher demand from smaller towns and semi-urban areas.

Industrial paint is technology-led. Don’t you earn a higher margin in this segment?

Ideally, it should be so. For Berger, industrial paints were at par, if not more profitable, in some cases, than decorative ones. But, the scenario has changed.

The fact that there are a lot of foreign companies which have come in and under-cut existing players on price has worsened the situation.

How has the decorative segment done well when home sales are down?

In decorative segment, nearly 85 per cent is repainting. The remaining 15 per cent is new buildings. So the impact has been less.

What are your expansion plans?

For decorative paints, we have just completed commissioning our largest plant at Hindupur in Andhra Pradesh at Rs 230 crore. We are planning a second unit, albeit a smaller one, at Hindupur for British Paints division.

Besides this, a Rs 18-crore powder-coating and industrial paint facility is coming up at Jejuri near Pune. It would go on-stream by December.<more>

Asian Paints anticipating and responding to changes over many decades
Think about creative friendly ad categories and the usual suspects the world over are automobiles, cola, sporting wear, clothes and the odd soap, shampoo or deo. In India, paints can quite comfortably be included in the list — particularly Asian Paints which has spawned some of the country's best remembered campaigns even while moving enough volumes to be market leader.

The first in the series was the 1991 'Mera wala' campaign that took a leap from the value for money stand of previous communication, focusing instead on the extensive range of colours. A year later, the brand linked itself to the spirit of festivity, building on the insight of people painting their houses before Diwali, Christmas, child birth or marriage . The theme was 'Khushi Ke Rang' (the colours of happiness).<more>

Jenson Nicholso standalone Sep '13 sales at Rs 13.11 crore
Jenson and Nicholson has reported a standalone sales turnover of Rs 13.11 crore and a net loss of Rs 0.96 crore for the quarter ended Sep '13. Jenson and Nicholson has reported a standalone sales turnover of Rs 13.11 crore and a net loss of Rs 0.96 crore for the quarter ended Sep '13. Other income for the quarter was Rs 0.47 crore. Jenson Nicholso shares closed at 2.05 on November 05, 2013 (NSE) and has given -28.07% returns over the last 6 months and -45.33% over the last 12 months.<more>

Up against odds, paint-makers spot growth prospects in non-metros
Thanks to better monsoon and higher disposable incomes, rural folks increasingly opt for branded products to colour their homes.

Industry biggies like Asian Paints and Berger have a reason to rejoice. There has been a growing evidence that more and more rural folks are lapping up branded paints to spruce up their walls this festive season.

This is particularly sweetening for them because the pain of slower growth in urban areas is easing. What this also means is these companies have started making aggressive inroads into hitherto uncharted rural as well as tier 1 and tier 2 cities, effectively grabbing market share from unorganised players, which have dominated so far, officials told <more>

The Osaka-based maker is keen on taking advantage of the marketing connections the German maker has with the automakers, it said.

Thai commandos guard 300kg gold for Mahabodhi temple in Bihar
PATNA: Two dozen commandos from Thailand are guarding nearly 300 kg gold in 13 boxes in Bihar's Bodh Gaya town as work began to cover the dome of 1,500-year old Mahabodhi temple in glitter.

The much awaited work to gold-plate the dome is being carried out by a team of technical experts from Thailand, officials said.

Two days after the 289 kg gold, donated by Buddhist devotees from Thailand, was brought to Bodh Gaya in a special plane from Bangkok, technical experts have finally started the work under tight security in and around the temple, said N. Dorjee, secretary of the Bodh Gaya temple management committee.

"It is a happy moment for all of us that the spire of the temple will get a glittering look with gold," Dorjee said.

Arvind Kumar Singh, a member of the committee, said the work by experts from Thailand is being videographed since it involves handling gold.

"A 40-member team, including a dozen experts and two dozen commandos, from Thailand arrived at Bodh Gaya with gold in 13 boxes to complete the work in 40 to 50 days," Singh said.

He said the team is led by Thailand's former deputy prime minister General Pricha.

parts2clean 2013 cleans up with record exhibitor and visitor countparts2clean - International Leading Trade Fair for Cleaning in Production and Maintenance Processes
parts2clean nets major growth in 11th season
Bilingual format sparks unprecedented interest in expert forum

Stuttgart/Hannover. parts2clean is making an impressive job of building and consolidating its position as the leading international trade fair for industrial parts and surface cleaning. In its eleventh season, which ran from 22 to 24 October this year, the fair delivered record results on all key metrics. For starters, its exhibitor list boasted 264 companies, which is a 15 percent increase from 2012 – and an all-time record. And at 6,350 square meters (68,350 sq. ft), its leased-space tally was also unprecedented. The fair featured exhibitors from 16 countries, with 20 percent coming from outside Germany. The total visitor count over all three days of the fair was 4,982 – up just on 14 percent from 2012. And, yes, that’s a record too. The fair’s visitors came from 49 countries (as compared with 39 last year), meaning that around 20 percent of all visitors came from outside Germany. In another pleasing development, the fair’s bilingual expert forum attracted a record-breaking 2,181 participants.

“We are delighted that parts2clean has enhanced its performance significantly on all fronts and that our growth and internationalization strategy is bearing fruit,” said Olaf Daebler, Deutsche Messe’s director in charge of parts2clean. “Of course, the pleasing numbers tell only part of the story. The fair’s high level of exhibitor and visitor satisfaction are just as important if not more so.” This year, nearly all of parts2clean’s 264 exhibitors said they were satisfied with how the fair went.

Qualified trade visitors with high-level decision-making authority
One reason for the exhibitor’s high satisfaction levels – apart from the fair’s pleasing growth – is the high quality of the visitors in terms of their technical know-how and decision-making authority. About 90 percent of the visitors at parts2clean have input into their organizations’ capital investment decisions, and this is reflected in the largely project-specific dialogue that characterized discussions at the display stands. Hans-Jörg Wössner, Managing Director, acp – advanced clean production GmbH, Germany: “parts2clean has always been a solid performer for us, but this year we made about 20 percent more contacts than in 2012, which is a fantastic result. They included a large number of qualified and high-quality new contacts and inquiries, the majority of which related to dry, partial cleaning and integrated pre-assembly cleaning solutions. Chuck Sexton, Sales Manager Industrial Products at the US-based cleaning media manufacturer Kyzen, was equally pleased with this year’s fair: “Once again it was an excellent show for us. We made a number of very good contacts with cleaning media users from Germany as well as other countries, such as the Czech Republic, Poland, Spain and even the USA. parts2clean is also a good opportunity to build and strengthen our relationships with manufacturers of cleaning plant and equipment. We will be exhibiting here again in 2014.” Participation in next year’s parts2clean is likewise a clear-cut decision for Berthold Relling, Head of Cleaning Technology Industry/Laboratory at Elma Hans Schmidbauer GmbH & Co. KG, Germany: “parts2clean went well, and we are very satisfied. Our showcase at the fair yielded numerous new contacts – both here in Germany and internationally in countries such as England, Russia, Korea, India, the USA and Brazil. All of the industries that we sell to were represented at the fair.” Francesco Sala, Sales Manager at Lavo srl, Italy, also rates this year’s fair as a success: “parts2clean is the most important trade fair for our industry in Europe. In Stuttgart, we got in touch with potential customers from a wide range of industries.” Gaudenz Groen, Marketing Manager, Dürr Ecoclean GmbH, Germany, likewise attaches great importance to parts2clean: “We exhibit at a lot of trade fairs in Europe, but for us, parts2clean is easily the most important of them. The visitors we meet here tend to be of a much higher quality and much more interested in getting down to details because they come here with real projects in mind. Consequently, parts2clean is the trade fair where we unveil our innovations. For instance, this year, we showcased our EcoCCore product. The other main reason why we participate in parts2clean is that it is an excellent way to gauge the market and gather ideas for the development of new products.” These sentiments are echoed by Manfred Holzleg, General Manager, Safechem Europe GmbH, Germany: “Visitors come to parts2clean looking for expert advice and detailed solution proposals for specific task areas and cleaning problems. The level of technical detail that gets discussed here is really quite striking. And that’s why it’s so good that providers from all sectors of plant cleaning exhibit here. They can network with one another and find integrated, multidisciplinary solutions. Rudolf Knoth-Bambule of Knoth Automation GmbH, Austria, highlighted another key benefit of parts2clean when he said, “Participating in parts2clean is a major plus for me, and not just because of the excellent contacts I make there. It also spares me a lot of international travel because it brings so many key players together under one roof.” The parts2clean fair is also a valuable platform for meetings and market intelligence, as Hakan Gülecyük, Sales Manager, Everest Elektromekanik, Turkey, explained: “We exhibit at parts2clean primarily in order to win new customers and help market our products in Western Europe. But we also invite our existing foreign representatives and agents here for meetings and use the fair to find new representatives and agents. Another important aspect is that the fair is a good place to survey our competitors and their products. This gives us a valuable, first-hand impression of current market developments.”

Bilingual expert forum attracts record participation
This year is the second time that the tried and proven expert forum has been held on a bilingual footing, with simultaneous translation of all presentations from German to English and vice versa. “The fact that participant numbers have grown nearly 24 percent to 2,181 reflects the strength and depth of interest in knowledge-sharing in the international industrial parts cleaning industry,” Olaf Daebler said.

In 2014, parts2clean will be held in its new, mid-year slot – from 24 to 26 June – in Stuttgart, Germany, and will thus be co-located for the very first time with O&S, the international trade fair for surface treatments and coatings, LASYS, the international trade fair for system solutions in laser material processing, and the AUTOMOTIVE Expo, a suite of shows dealing with various aspects of the automotive industry.
