Two Nippon paints get green labelled in Singapore
Mar. 11, 2014 (LBT) - Nippon Paint Lanka (Pvt) Ltd has announced that two of its brands, Medifresh 3 in 1 and Weatherbond Algae Guard have been certified by the Singapore Green Label Scheme. The two Nippon paint variants are the only paint products to be thus Singapore Green Label certified among those available in the local market. It is also the first step in an ongoing improvement process implemented by Nippon Paint Lanka to become a more eco-friendly producer of the highest quality interior and exterior paints.

Launched in May 1992 and administered by the Singapore Environment Council since June 1999, the Singapore Green Labelling Scheme is Singapore's leading environmental standard and certification mark. The certification evaluates products through stringent standards and encourages the improvement, promotion, and development of the ‘ecolabelling’ of products and services. Green Label certified products have a competitive advantage, are marketable and readily accepted by consumers or business associates in making their purchasing decisions. Third-party, environmental performance recognition, certification and labeling to improve, promote, and develop the ‘ecolabeling’ of products and services is a positive trend seen all over the world in global markets that are increasingly looking to be more environmentally viable and socially responsible.<more>

Pipeline coating project at African water utility helps thwart corrosion, contamination
AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS, March 13, 2014 -- A major project has been completed for Africa Pipe Industries by PPG Protective and Marine Coatings, which has suppled internal and external coatings on a 46-km, 2.1-m diameter pipeline installed for South African utility Rand Water.
PPG provided SIGMALINE™ 523 as an internal lining and SIGMALINE™ 855 as an external coating on the pipe installed at Sasolburg in the Free State region. Together, the coatings deliver high-performance protection of both surfaces against corrosion and contamination of the pipeline content.
For the pipeline's external coating, SIGMALINE 855 offers effective corrosion and water resistance and an aesthetic finish. Likewise, the coating's excellent abrasion and impact-resistance protected against minor damage during handling, transporting and installation with ultraviolet (UV) protection whilst awaiting installation onsite.
Approved and certified for potable drinking water to the BS 6920 2 standard, SIGMALINE 523 was applied as the internal lining. Resistant against bacterial growth, fast-curing and able to be applied to rotating pipes, the coating offers easy application on field joints after installation welding.

Workers has been on strike from December 20, 2013, raising issues including that bonus for the year 2012-13
workers at Asian Paints’ Sriperumbudur plant have gone on a hunger strike since Friday. The move follows a three-month general strike since December 20, 2013 demanding bonus for 2012-13. The Asian Paints Employees Union, affiliated with the All India Central Council of Trade Unions, said an inconclusive discussion with the management early last week has triggered the hunger strike.

When contacted, a company source said, “Talks are going on and we are trying our best to resolve the issue.” The source added that while the production has been affected due to the strike, the company was able meet the demand with the help of other plants.<more>

Hiked prices by 2-3% on rising input costs: Shalimar Paints
Sameer Nagpal, MD & CEO, Shalimar Paints said in the third quarter most paint companies had seen an impact on profitability due to higher commodity or raw material prices. That impact is being passed on to consumers through the price increase

Shalimar Paints Shalimar Paints hiked prices of industrial paints and decorative products last month by 2-3 percent, taking total FY14 price hike to 5-7 percent depending upon the product category, said Sameer Nagpal, MD & CEO, Shalimar Paints. Earlier in the day, sources said Asian Paints had hiked the price of industrial paints by 4 percent. In the third quarter, most paint companies had seen an impact on profitability due to higher commodity or raw material prices. That impact is being passed on to consumers through the price increase, he said. Also Read: Will see double-digit volume growth in Q4: Berger's Roy Most paint companies had also reported margin pressure in the third quarter. Nagpal said though margins are a function of a number of things, this price rise will certainly help neutralise some of the dip seen in the third quarter. Below is the verbatim transcript of Sameer Nagpal's interview with Reema Tendulkar and Ekta Batra of CNBC-TV18.

Reema: Any plans for you’ll to go ahead and up industrial paint prices?

A: We have undertaken some price hike last month which is in the range of 2-3 percent. They cover both industrial and decorative products.

Ekta: What is the reason for price hike? Is it raw material costs which are still plaguing?

A: You saw in quarter three all paint companies had their profitability impacted because of higher commodity and higher currency. Some of that impact is being passed on to the consumers through the price hike.

2 Men Convicted Over Secret of Titanium Dioxide
WALTER LIEW, ROBERT MAEGERLE GUILTY OF ECONOMIC ESPIONAGE
A storage tank for a Dupont plant is reflected in the Kanawha River in Marmet, W.Va.
(NEWSER) – A six-week trial yesterday ended in the conviction of two California men who stood accused of stealing chemical giant DuPont's recipe for titanium dioxide and selling it to a Chinese competitor for more than $20 million. Walter Liew, 56, and Robert Maegerle, 78, now face as many as 20 and 15 years behind bars, respectively, for handing over the secrets of what Quartz describes as "a chemical used to whiten the cream in Oreo cookies" (along with plenty of other uses related to everything from paint to car exteriors). That competitor, state-owned Pangang Group, had apparently had its offers to buy the formula from DuPont turned down on a number of occasions; per Businessweek, prosecutors say Panang Group is in the process of constructing a sizable plant to produce the pigment, which generates $17 billion in sales for DuPont annually.<more>

Scientists Produce Self-Cleaning Coatings on Glass SubstrateScientists Produce Self-Cleaning Coatings on Glass Substrate
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian researchers succeeded in the production of silica/titania/silica three-layer self-cleaning coating (SiO2/TiO2/SiO2) on glass substrate.
The coating has more stable phydrophilic and photocatalytic properties and much more transparency than titania coating.

In recent years, self-cleaning properties of titanium dioxide thin films have attracted the attention of many industrialists active in the field of building construction and optical devices. This specification is considered to be the result of combination of superhydrophilicity and photocatalytic properties of the thin film. In this study, a three-layer coating of SiO2 / TiO2 / SiO2 was deposited on glass substrate through vapor physical deposition method by using electron beam (EB-PVD). Next, hydrophilicity, photocatalytic and self-cleaning properties of the produced layer were compared to those of SiO2/TiO2 film.

The contact angle between water and the surface of the film exposed to UV light was measured, and the results showed that contact angle in SiO2/TiO2/SiO2 film had a quicker reduction than in SiO2/TiO2 film. In addition, the thin film of SiO2/TiO2/ SiO2 had conserved its hydrophilic properties after being kept in a dark place in comparison with SiO2/TiO2 film. It was also observed that the three-layered film that had a layer of SiO2 deposited on its top had higher photocatalytic activity than the other two films.<more>

Dear Joe,
I’m working on a marketing research project and have a question regarding powder coatings used on MDF (medium density fiberboard). Do they always have to be UV-cured?
Regards,
Pamela Safarek
Senior Industry Analyst at The Freedonia Group

Dear Pamela,
No they do not. There are essentially two options: UV Curable and low temperature thermosetting powder coatings. The UV curables require an additional process step but cure in a shorter process footprint. They also provide better coating durability (mainly hardness and chemical resistance). UV cure requires line-of-sight curing that also is critical to the distance of the lamps to the coating surface. In addition film thickness must be carefully controlled. If the coating is too thick (or too opaque) it will not cure completely. And as you can guess the material cost is higher than more conventional products.

Thermosetting powders can be used as well. They require longer curing times (typically 20 to 30 minutes), although infrared heat can mitigate some of this. They are highly catalyzed and therefore must be stored in a controlled environment and can advance chemically which affects coating smoothness. The thermosets are generally less smooth than the UV curable types and typically less durable.

As for specifics regarding cure requirements this mainly depends upon the chemistry. Polyester TGIC systems work with cure cycles of about 25 minutes at 265⁰F. Acrylics can cure as low as 25 minutes at 275⁰F. Epoxies have been formulated to cure at 25 minutes at 230⁰F. Epoxy-polyesters (hybrids) can be processed at 25 minutes at 250⁰F. Polyurethanes and Polyester-HAA require cure temperatures over 300⁰F. More conventional powders cure with less dwell time at much higher temperatures and therefore cannot be used for MDF.

UV curable powder technology requires a melt stage, typically around 60 to 90 seconds at a peak temperature of 200 to 240⁰F. The additional UV cure process usually takes only a few seconds depending upon the complexity of the part.

Lots of film performance and process issues are very specific to the formulation so you need to be careful with generalizations. A number of powder manufacturers make and sell both types of chemistries as one shoe doesn't fit all.

Dear Mr. Powder,
We are manufacturer of polyester resins for powder coatings. Our customers are having difficulty in achieving consistent high gloss and impact resistant in their powder coatings. Can you help us determine the root cause of this problem.
Kind regards,
Vijay Rakholiya
Research and Development Manager at Spark e Lina Polymers Pvt Ltd

Dear Vijay,
I understand that you are a polyester resin manufacturer and supplier and that your customer (a powder coating formulator/producer) is getting low gloss and/or poor impact. One basic question - how is the solvent resistance of these coatings? Chemical resistance is a good indication of cure and it will be poor if the stoichiometry of the binder is incorrect. Poor cure as evidenced by poor solvent resistance will produce poor impact resistance. If the stoichiometry is theoretically correct and the impact resistance remains poor then I would investigate the molecular weight distribution of the polyester resin. If it is too broad then there are too many polymeric species which can account for poor cure due to variable functionality. Broad molecular weight distribution can also account for poor gloss.

Best regards,
Joe

More than 450 exhibitors will present products, processes and services exclusively from the field of industrial coating technology at PaintExpo at the Karlsruhe Exhibition Centre from the 8th through the 11th of April, 2014. They’ll travel to the event from 23 countries, and roughly 25% of the participating companies come from outside of Germany. As compared with its last event in 2012, the 5th leading international trade fair for industrial coating technology is distinguished by approximately 10% growth in exhibitor numbers. Occupied net exhibition floor space has also experienced a significant boost of about 19% to 133,000 square feet. Available booth locations are nearly booked out.

Experience New Products Live
“PaintExpo 2014 will not only showcase the world’s most comprehensive offerings for liquid painting, powder coating and coil coating, it will also present innovations, further developments and new trends in all of the sectors represented at the exhibition. Numerous live demonstrations will await the visitors”, reports Jürgen Haußmann, managing director of event promoters FairFair GmbH. For example, the demonstration of UV technology which cures the painted object within a matter of seconds in an inert gas atmosphere is at the height of fashion. At another booth, a compact, fully automated powder coating machine will coat small parts in continuous operation. An innovative light tunnel allows for reliable inspection of painted auto bodies. Visitors will be able to see for themselves how quickly and reliably defects are detected at a live demonstration. Where conveyor technology and automation of the painting process with robots are concerned, various “moving” exhibits will substantiate just how flexible and adaptable these systems are today, and how easy they are to programme.

Innovative Solutions for Everything from Pre-Treatment to Packaging
And the list of offerings covering innovations and further developments is far from exhausted here. For example, exhibitors will present new processes and products for more efficient and ecological cleaning and pre-treatment of metallic surfaces – amongst others solutions based on renewable raw materials. New solutions for blasting, grinding and ionising metal, plastic and wooden surfaces will also be premiered at PaintExpo, as well as system concepts which reduce energy consumption for powder coating and liquid painting, and at the same time increase flexibility with regard to processes, manufacturing lot quantities and expandability. Where application is concerned, new and enhanced paint guns and atomisers, as well as alternative atomising gases, are increasing material efficiency and improving quality.
The exhibitors at this year’s PaintExpo will also present lots of new products in the areas of liquid and UV paint systems, as well as powdered enamel systems. Amongst other things, emphasis in the field of powdered enamels will be placed on further improvement of corrosion protection, lower baking temperatures and reduced material consumption with the help of ultrathin-layer systems. New processes, for instance for energy-saving powder coatings and the production of chrome-VI-free surfaces, will also be presented at PaintExpo.
Perhaps somewhat less spectacular but no less interesting are innovations in the field of test and inspection systems, accessories such as covering materials, painting hangers, filters and pumps, as well as paint stripping and packaging solutions.
In cooperation with the DFO e.V. (German research association for surface finishing), an expert forum will take place on all four days of this year’s PaintExpo with interesting presentations held in German from all fields of industrial coating technology. The spectrum ranges from issues concerning process optimisation for liquid painting and powder coating, as well as pre-treatment and quality control, right on up to environmental engineering and purification technology.
PaintExpo will take place at the Karlsruhe Exhibition Centre from 8 through 11 April 2014, and will be open Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The WTT Expo trade fair for industrial heating and cooling technology and the HallTec trade fair for technical building equipment for industry and the commercial trades will take place concurrent to PaintExpo 2014 from Tuesday through Thursday.
