Oil roils paint firms
Calcutta: The top four paint manufacturers - Asian Paints, Berger
Paints, Kansai Nerolac and Akzo Nobel - have seen a rise in raw
material costs in the March quarter. The four companies together
control over 50 per cent of the domestic paints industry.
To mitigate part of the impact and to protect the margins, paint
firms have taken two rounds of price hike in 2018 - in March and May
- with a combined rise close to 4 per cent already.
The paints industry uses crude oil derivatives such as titanium
dioxide and monomers as raw materials, part of which is imported
into the country.
The hike is mostly on the decorative paints segment as industrial
paint pricing is mostly on a negotiated basis. Decorative paints
contribute to over 70 per cent of the industry turnover. The
industry is not discounting another round of price hike from being
considered depending upon the trend in material costs.<more>

Nearly 55% of raw materials used by paint companies are crude oil
derivatives and account for about 30-35% of the total raw material
cost of the sector. In the past one year, crude oil prices have
jumped by more than 40%. Not just that, prices of pigments like
titanium dioxide, iron oxide and zinc oxide also remain elevated <more>

Management commentaries by paint makers indicate that demand, which

BASF predicts car color
trends for 2018 to 2019 based on human behavior
From "Atomium
Sky" to "The Urbanist," intensive research into human behavior acts
as a crystal ball into your future car's color.
According to automotive supplier BASF, if you're in North America
and you end up buying a car in the 2022 model year, it's likely to
be painted a deep blue hue called "Atomium Sky" thanks to your
upwardly trending interest in science and space travel.
That may feel like a stretch for you, but there's a load of research
behind BASF's prediction. Every year the designers at the German
